Wo worth the chase Wo worth the dayA
That cost thy life my gallant grey ScottB
-
The Hunter stooped o er his dying steedC
With sad dejected mienD
And softly stroked its glossy neckE
Lustrous as silken sheenD
With iron will and nerve of steelF
And pale lips tight compressedG
He kept the tears from eyes that longH
Were strange to such a guestG
-
Thou rt dying now my faithful oneI
Alas tis easy knownJ
Thy neck would arch beneath my touchK
Thou dst brighten at my toneJ
But turn not thus thy restless eyesL
Upon my saddened browM
Nor look with such imploring gazeN
I cannot help thee nowM
-
No more we ll bound o er dew gemmed swardO
At break of summer mornP
Or follow on through forests greenD
The hunter s merry hornP
No more we ll brave the rapid streamQ
Nor battle with the tideR
Nor cross the slipp ry mountain pathS
As we were wont to rideR
-
Oh we have travelled many milesT
And dangers have we bravedU
And more than once thy matchless speedC
Thy master s life hath savedU
And many nights the forest swardO
Has been the couch we ve pressedG
Where pillowed on thy glossy neckE
Most sweet has been my restG
-
How often too I we shared with theeV
The hunter s scanty fareW
To see thee suffer want or painX
Mute friend I could not bearW
And now thou best in agonyV
As if thy heart would burstY
And I what can I do for theeV
Save slake thy burning thirstY
-
That parting sob that failing glanceZ
The pains of death are pastA2
Thy glazing eyes still turned on meV
With love unto the lastA2
Well may my tears o er thy cold formB2
My steed flow fast and freeV
For oh I have had many friendsC2
Yet none so true as theeV
