Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDD EFGFHH IJKJLL HMNMHH OPQPRR SEGEGT

A kindly thought a generous deedA
Ye gallant sons of toilB
No nobler trophy could ye raiseC
On your adopted soilB
Than this monument to your kindred deadD
Who sleep beneath in their cold dark bedD
-
Like you they left their fatherlandE
And crossed th Atlantic s foamF
To seek for themselves a new careerG
And win another homeF
But alas for hearts that had beat so highH
They reached the goal but only to dieH
-
Let no rich worldling dare to sayI
For them why should we grieveJ
But paupers came they to our shoresK
Want sickness death to leaveJ
Each active arm jail of power and healthL
And each honest heart was a mine of wealthL
-
Twas a mournful end to day dreams highH
A sad and fearful doomM
To exchange their fever stricken shipsN
For the loathsome typhus tombM
And ere they had smiled at Canada s skyH
On this stranger land breathe their dying sighH
-
The strong man in the prime of lifeO
Struck down in one short hourP
The loving wife the rose cheeked girlQ
Fairer than opening flowerP
The ardent youth with fond hopes elateR
O ertaken all by one common fateR
-
Long since forgotten here they restS
Sons of a distant landE
The epochs of their short careerG
Mere footprints on life s sandE
But this stone will tell through many a yearG
They died on our shores and they slumber hereT
