Hush mourning mother wan and paleA
No sobs no grieving nowB
No burning tears must thou let fallC
Upon that cold still browB
No look of anguish cast aboveD
Nor smite thine aching breastE
But clasp thy hands and thank thy GodF
Thy darling is at restE
-
Close down those dark fringed snowy lidsG
Over the violet eyesH
Whose liquid light was once as clearI
As that of summer skiesH
Is it not bliss to know what e erJ
Thy future griefs and fearsK
They will be never dimmed like thineL
By sorrow s scalding tearsM
-
Enfold the tiny fingers fairN
From which life s warmth has fledO
For ever freed from wearing toilP
The toil for daily breadO
Compose the softly moulded limbsQ
The little waxen feetR
Spared wayside journeys long and roughS
Spared many a weary beatR
-
Draw close around the lifeless formT
The shreds of raiment tornU
Her only birthright just such ragsV
As thou for years hast wornU
Her earthly dower the bitter crustW
She might from pity craveX
Moistened by tears then final giftY
A pauper s lowly graveX
-
Now raise thy spirit s gaze aboveD
See st thou yon angel fairN
With flowing robes and starry crownZ
Gemming her golden hairN
Changed glorified in every traitA2
Still with that beauty mildB2
Oh mourning mother thou dost knowC2
Thine own thy late lost childB2
-
An heir to heaven s entrancing blissD2
Veiled in its golden glowC2
Still thinks she of the lonely heartE2
Left on this earth belowC2
Courage not long thy weary stepsF2
O er barren wastes shall roamG2
Thy daring prays the Father nowB
To quickly call thee homeG2
