'Tis midnight and solemn darkness broodsA
In a lonely sacred faneB
The church of Our Lady of MontserratC
So famous throughout all SpainB
For countless were the pilgrim hostsA
Who knelt at that sacred shrineD
With aching hearts that came to seekE
Relief and grace divineD
-
Pure as the light of the evening starF
Shines the lamp's pale solemn rayG
That burns through midnight's hush and gloomH
As well as the glare of dayG
Like the Christian soul enwrapped in GodI
Resigning each vain delightJ
Each earthly lure to burn and shineD
With pure love in His sightJ
-
Softly the gentle radiance fallsA
On a mail clad warrior thereK
Who humbly bows his stately headL
In silent earnest prayerK
It flashes back from his corslet brightJ
From each shining steel clad handM
And the brow which tells that he was bornN
To pomp and high commandM
-
Say who is he that vigil keepsA
Like the warrior knights of oldO
Through the long lone hours of the silent nightJ
Ere they donned their spurs of goldO
A soldier brave and proud is heP
And bears a noble nameQ
Since Pampeluna's glorious dayG
Won Loyola his fameQ
-
What doth he at this lowly shrineD
What mean those prayers and sighsA
The tearful mist that dims the lightJ
Of his flashing eagle eyesA
They tell of life's vain pomps and prideR
Esteemed as worthless drossA
For the dauntless soldier has becomeS
The soldier of the CrossA
-
That sword that once like lightning sweptT
Through ranks of foes hard pressedU
Now hangs beside Our Lady's shrineD
Henceforth in peace to restU
And soon the penitent's rough dark robeV
His girdle and cowl of gloomH
Will replace the soldier's armor brightJ
And his lofty waving plumeH
-
Well done well done thou warrior braveW
A noble choice is thineD
What are the laurels of earth besideR
The joys of bliss divineD
And thou hast won though seeking notC
The saint's undying fameQ
Christ's Holy Church will evermoreX
Revere and bless thy nameQ
