Neath the radiance faint of the starlit skyA
The gleaming snow drifts lay wide and highA
O er hill and dell stretched a mantle whiteB
The branches glittered with crystal brightB
But the winter wind s keen icy breathC
Was merciless numbing and chill as deathC
-
It clamored around a handsome pileD
Abode of modern wealth and styleD
Where smiling guests had gathered to greetE
Its master s birth day with welcome meetE
And clink of glasses and loud gay toneF
With song and jest drowned the wind s wild moanF
-
Yet farther on another abodeG
Its pillared portico proudly showedG
From its windows high flowed streams of lightB
Mingling with outside shadows of nightB
And the strains of music rapid gayH
Told well how within sped the hours awayH
-
Steal but one glance at that magic sceneI
And long you will spell bound gaze I weenI
On mirrors and flowers and paintings oldJ
And side boards heaped with vessels of goldJ
Proud stately men and women most fairK
Glitt ring in toilets marvellous rareK
-
Sharp grief may torture many a heartL
But its pangs are hid with wond rous artL
Breasts may harbor hate envy or guileD
But all is concealed neath the studied smileD
And carelessly gay is each well trained faceM
As the dancers flash past with magic graceM
-
Not far away down yon narrow laneI
Where poverty herds with guilt and painI
Are homes where the wind finds entrance freeN
Searching each cranny with savage gleeN
And freezing the blood of those withinI
Through their wretched garments scant and thinI
-
List to the music that meets the earO
No sweet strains of Strauss will greet you hereO
But the moan of sickness the feeble wailP
Of suff ring childhood of mothers paleP
The groan of despair or alas still worseQ
The blasphemous jest or fierce deep curseQ
-
See on yon board is their banquet spreadR
Coarse broken remnants of mouldy breadR
No cheerful flame in the fire place bareK
To temper the cold of the biting airK
Or the chill of the snow on the rotting floorS
Drifting beneath the ill closed doorS
-
O woman one gem from those that deckT
Thy taper fingers white brow or neckT
Young girl a rose from thy glossy hairK
One inch of that lace so costly and rareK
Would give food and heat and cheerful lightB
To that wretched home for at least one nightB
-
Revellers met round the festive boardU
A hot house fruit from your dainty hoardU
The price of one draught of that wine so oldJ
That it seems as precious as liquid goldJ
Would bring joy to more than one aching breastV
And smiles to lips unused to such guestV
-
Children of fashion children of wealthW
Who hear harsh truths as it were by stealthW
An hour will come to all who liveX
Of their stewardship here strict account to giveY
Before the Great Judge wise stern and pureZ
Who will justice mete to both rich and poorA2
-
Well for you then if kind word and deedB2
Or generous alms to those in needB2
Have marked the course of your life s brief dreamC2
They ll plead for you in that hour supremeC2
Outweigh past errors and justice moveD2
To the side of mercy and pitying loveE2
