Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGBBHH IIJJKK LLDDMM IINNII OOPPQQ RRKKSS TTKKBB UUJJVV WWXYZA2 B2B2C2C2D2E2Neath the radiance faint of the starlit sky | A |
The gleaming snow drifts lay wide and high | A |
O er hill and dell stretched a mantle white | B |
The branches glittered with crystal bright | B |
But the winter wind s keen icy breath | C |
Was merciless numbing and chill as death | C |
- | |
It clamored around a handsome pile | D |
Abode of modern wealth and style | D |
Where smiling guests had gathered to greet | E |
Its master s birth day with welcome meet | E |
And clink of glasses and loud gay tone | F |
With song and jest drowned the wind s wild moan | F |
- | |
Yet farther on another abode | G |
Its pillared portico proudly showed | G |
From its windows high flowed streams of light | B |
Mingling with outside shadows of night | B |
And the strains of music rapid gay | H |
Told well how within sped the hours away | H |
- | |
Steal but one glance at that magic scene | I |
And long you will spell bound gaze I ween | I |
On mirrors and flowers and paintings old | J |
And side boards heaped with vessels of gold | J |
Proud stately men and women most fair | K |
Glitt ring in toilets marvellous rare | K |
- | |
Sharp grief may torture many a heart | L |
But its pangs are hid with wond rous art | L |
Breasts may harbor hate envy or guile | D |
But all is concealed neath the studied smile | D |
And carelessly gay is each well trained face | M |
As the dancers flash past with magic grace | M |
- | |
Not far away down yon narrow lane | I |
Where poverty herds with guilt and pain | I |
Are homes where the wind finds entrance free | N |
Searching each cranny with savage glee | N |
And freezing the blood of those within | I |
Through their wretched garments scant and thin | I |
- | |
List to the music that meets the ear | O |
No sweet strains of Strauss will greet you here | O |
But the moan of sickness the feeble wail | P |
Of suff ring childhood of mothers pale | P |
The groan of despair or alas still worse | Q |
The blasphemous jest or fierce deep curse | Q |
- | |
See on yon board is their banquet spread | R |
Coarse broken remnants of mouldy bread | R |
No cheerful flame in the fire place bare | K |
To temper the cold of the biting air | K |
Or the chill of the snow on the rotting floor | S |
Drifting beneath the ill closed door | S |
- | |
O woman one gem from those that deck | T |
Thy taper fingers white brow or neck | T |
Young girl a rose from thy glossy hair | K |
One inch of that lace so costly and rare | K |
Would give food and heat and cheerful light | B |
To that wretched home for at least one night | B |
- | |
Revellers met round the festive board | U |
A hot house fruit from your dainty hoard | U |
The price of one draught of that wine so old | J |
That it seems as precious as liquid gold | J |
Would bring joy to more than one aching breast | V |
And smiles to lips unused to such guest | V |
- | |
Children of fashion children of wealth | W |
Who hear harsh truths as it were by stealth | W |
An hour will come to all who live | X |
Of their stewardship here strict account to give | Y |
Before the Great Judge wise stern and pure | Z |
Who will justice mete to both rich and poor | A2 |
- | |
Well for you then if kind word and deed | B2 |
Or generous alms to those in need | B2 |
Have marked the course of your life s brief dream | C2 |
They ll plead for you in that hour supreme | C2 |
Outweigh past errors and justice move | D2 |
To the side of mercy and pitying love | E2 |
