Won by the Allies during the Crimean war though with great losses in killed and woundedA
-
-
Rejoice the fearful day is o'erB
For the victors and the slainC
Our cannon proclaim from shore to shoreD
The Allies have won againE
Let our joy bells ring out music clearF
The gayest they've ever pealedA
Let bonfires flames the dark night cheerF
We are masters of the fieldA
-
But list dost hear that mournful wailG
'Bove the joyous revelryH
Rising from hillside and lowly valeG
Say what can its meaning beH
From Erin's sunny emerald shoreD
It trembles upon the galeG
And rises with the torrent's roarD
From the birth place of the GaelG
-
Fair Albion too in every spotA
Of thy land of promise wideA
Is heard that dirge for the mournful lotA
Of thy soldier sons thy prideA
Them shall no bugle at dawn of dayA
Arouse from their quiet sleepI
Them shall no charger with shrill neighJ
Bear off to the hillside steepI
-
'Mid the dead and dying stretched unknownK
On Crimea's blood stained earthL
Lie the household gods of many a homeM
The lights of many a hearthN
While vainly woman's weeping voiceO
Calls on each well loved oneP
The tender wife on her girlhoods choiceO
The fond mother on her sonP
-
And not only from the peasant's cotA
Comes that mournful dirge like cryQ
'Tis heard unto all a common lotA
Where dwell the great and highQ
And tears fall fast for the last lost childA
Of many a noble raceR
Who has perished in that struggle wildA
And left none to fill his placeR
-
Yet if above our laurels brightA
Falls many a bitter tearS
Still still may we find a gleam of lightA
Our stricken hearts to cheerF
They have fallen in the country's causeT
That their youth and manhood nursedA
They have fallen true to honor's lawsU
In a sacred strife and justA
