With what a flood of wondrous thoughtsA
Each Christian breast must swellB
When wandering back through ages pastC
With simple faith they dwellB
On quiet Nazareth s sacred sodD
Where the Child Saviour s footsteps trodD
-
Awe struck we picture to ourselvesE
That brow serene and fairF
That gentle face the long rich curlsG
Of wavy golden hairF
And those deep wondrous star like eyesH
Holy and calm as midnight skiesH
-
We see Him in the work shop shedI
With Joseph wise and goodJ
Obedient to His guardian s wordK
Docile and meek of moodL
The Mighty Lord of Heaven and EarthM
Toiling like one of lowly birthM
-
Or else with His young Mother fairF
That sinless spotless oneN
Who watched with fond and reverent careF
Her high and glorious SonN
Knowing a matron s joy and prideO
And yet a Virgin pure besideO
-
All marvelled at the strange shy graceP
Of Mary s gentle SonN
Young mothers envied her the BoyQ
Who love from all hearts wonN
And gazing on that face so mildR
Prayed low to Heaven for such a childR
-
Though with the boys of NazarethS
He never joined in mirthM
Yet young and old felt strangely drawnT
Towards His modest worthM
E en though that quiet wondrous ChildR
Had never laughed nor even smiledR
-
For even then prophetic roseU
Before His spirit s gazeV
The cruel Cross the griefs reservedW
For manhood s coming daysV
And worse than all the countless hostX
That spite His pangs might yet be lostY
-
Silent and calm He held His wayZ
From morn till evening stillA2
His thoughts intent on working outB2
His Mighty Father s willA2
While Heaven bent in ecstasyC2
O er the Boy God of GalileeC2
