In MemoriamA
Grief reigns now within the convent wallsB
And sadly float through its silent hallsB
The notes of a requiem solemn clearC
Falling like wail on each listening earD
And with tearful eyes and features paleE
With low bowed head and close drawn veilE
To the convent church round a bier to kneelF
The daughters of Marguerite Bourgeoys stealF
-
Scant is the mourning pomp displayedG
Nor plumes nor hangings of gloomy shadeG
But rev rend prelates and priests are thereH
With crowds of mourners joining in prayerH
Each sister s heart is filled with griefI
To which faith alone can bring reliefI
Deploring the loss of that sainted nunJ
Friend mother and abbess all in oneJ
-
Yet why should sorrow fill thus each breastK
That well loved one has entered her restK
To live in eternal cloudless lightL
To live in our memories blessed and brightL
Her chair may be vacant her place unfilledM
But her mission high was all fulfilledM
And the thought of how well she did her partN
Will ever dwell in each sister s heartN
-
Sixty one years passed in convent homeA
Amassing wealth for a world to comeA
Sixty one years of constant prayerH
Of cloister duties fulfilled with careH
Of gentle aid to each sister dearC
Kind tender counsel sympathy s tearH
Of high commune with her Maker knownO
Perchance to herself and to God aloneO
-
Sixty one years oh think of it wellP
Since first she entered the convent cellP
On her cheek youth s soft and roseate dyesQ
Its radiant light in her cloudless eyesQ
Turning from earth s alluring wilesR
From worldly promptings from pleasure s smilesR
From love s soft pleading look and toneO
To give herself unto God aloneO
-
Since then she has witnessed many a changeS
In the world around her startling strangeS
Her much loved Order growing in strengthT
Throughout America s breadth and lengthT
Our young city stretching far and wideU
Till it reaches Mount Royal s verdant sideU
Where fair as an Eden through leafy screenV
Villa Maria is dimly seenV
-
Timeworn foreheads and brows of snowW
Has the one we mourn seen in dust laid lowW
Fair girlish novice and nun professedK
Quietly gathered to earth s dark breastK
But with thoughts on heaven she through allX
Patiently waited her Father s callX
It came and now she lays gladly downY
Her long borne cross to take up her crownY
