The moon from solemn azure skyA
Looked down on earth belowB
And coldly her wan light fell alikeC
On scenes of joy and woeB
A stately palace reared its domeD
Within reigned warmth and lightE
And festive mirth the moon s faint raysF
Soft kissed its marble whiteE
-
A little farther was the homeD
Of toil alas and wantG
That spectre grim that countless hearthsH
Seems ceaselessly to hauntI
And yet as if in mocking mirthJ
She smiled on that drear spotK
Silvering brightly the ruined eavesL
And roof of that poor cotK
-
And then with curious gaze she lookedM
Within a curtained loomN
Where sat a girl of gentle mienO
In young life s early bloomN
Her glitt ring light made still more brightE
The veil and bridal flowerP
Which were to wreathe the girl s fair browQ
In the morrow s solemn hourP
-
With changeless smile she gleamed withinR
A casement gloomy loneS
Where lay a cold and rigid formT
A death bed stretched uponU
The fixed gaze of the half closed eyesV
The forehead chill and whiteE
The shroud and pall more ghastly lookedM
Wrapped thus in still silv ry lightE
-
Long sadly gazed I then a thoughtW
Sharp bitter filled my heartX
Gainst that cold orb which in our joysY
And sorrows took no partX
Which shone as bright o er couch of deathZ
In prison s darkened gloomN
As o er the festal scenes of earthJ
Or stately palace roomN
-
An inward voice reproved the thoughtW
And whispered soft and lowB
Unto that glorious orb twas givenA2
Its Maker s power to showB
Throughout long ages has it shoneS
With pure undying flameB2
His will obeying Dreamer goB
And do thou too the sameB2
