Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJJFJ JKLKHMDN OPFPFJQJ HRLLJSHS

He stood on the wood crowned summitA
Of our mountain s regal heightB
And gazed on the scene before himC
By October s golden lightB
And his dark eyes earnest thoughtfulD
Lit up with a softer rayE
As they dwelt on the scene of beautyF
That outspread before him layE
-
Like a sea of liquid silverG
St Lawrence neath the sunH
Reflected the forest foliageI
And the Indian wigwams dunH
Embracing the fairy islandsJ
That its swift tide loving lavesJ
Reposing in tranquil beautyF
Amid its sapphire wavesJ
-
To the eastward frowning mountainsJ
Rose in solemn grandeur stillK
The glittering sunlight glintingL
On steep and rugged hillK
Whilst in the far horizonH
Past leafy dell and hauntM
Like a line of misty purpleD
Rose the dim hills of VermontN
-
Then Cartier s rapt gaze wanderedO
Where starred with wild flowers sweetP
In its gorgeous autumn beautyF
Lay the forest at his feetP
With red and golden gloryF
All the foliage seemed ablazeJ
Yet with brightness strangely softenedQ
By October s amber hazeJ
-
Around him stretched the mountainH
Ever lovely ever youngR
Graceful softly undulatingL
By tall forest trees o erhungL
Twas then his thought found utteranceJ
The words Mont Royal cameS
And thus our Royal MountainH
Received its fitting nameS
