In Memory Of The Late G. C. Of Montreal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGHHII JKLLMM NNOOPP EEQRSS

The earth was flooded in the amber hazeA
That renders so lovely our autumn daysA
The dying leaves softly fluttered downB
Bright crimson and orange and golden brownB
And the hush of autumn solemn and stillC
Brooded o er valley plain and hillC
-
Yet still from that scene with rare beauty rifeD
And the touching sweetness of fading lifeD
From glowing foliage and sun bright rayE
My gaze soon mournfully turned awayE
To rest instead on a new made graveF
Enshrouding a heart true loyal and braveF
-
At rest for aye Cold and pulseless nowG
That high throbbing breast and calm earnest browG
Laid down forever the quick gifted penH
That toiled but for God and his fellow menH
Silent that voice free from hatred or ruthI
Yet e er boldly raised in the cause of truthI
-
For the prize of our faith grateful he provedJ
Breaking from ties and from scenes once lovedK
From rank and fortune and the lures of prideL
That tempt the gifted on every sideL
To devote his genius his pen of fireM
To aims more holy and themes far higherM
-
He was true to the land he had made his homeN
And true to the grand old faith of RomeN
At whose feet he laid powers rarer than goldO
As knights laid their lances and shields of oldO
That Church on whose loving maternal breastP
He peacefully sank to eternal restP
-
Oh no tears for him who passed awayE
Ere frame or spirit knew touch of decayE
Ere time had deadened one feeling warmQ
Or his genius robbed of one single charmR
As he was when death struck his image shall dwellS
In the countless hearts that loved him so wellS
