Husband And Wife Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGIJJ KFKFLM NONODD PHPHFF KQKQRR

The world had chafed his spirit proudA
By its wearing crushing strifeB
The censure of the thoughtless crowdA
Had touched a blameless lifeB
Like the dove of old from the water s foamC
He wearily turned to the ark of homeC
-
Hopes he had cherished with joyous heartD
Had toiled for many a dayE
With body and spirit and patient artD
Like mists had melted awayE
And o er day dreams vanished o er fond hopes flownF
He sat him down to mourn aloneF
-
No not alone for soft fingers restG
On his hot and aching browH
Back the damp hair is tenderly pressedG
While a sweet voice whispers lowI
Thy joys have I shared O my husband trueJ
And shall I not share thy sorrows tooJ
-
Vain task to resist the loving gazeK
That so fondly meets his ownF
Revealing a heart that cares for praiseK
From him and him aloneF
And though censure and grief upon him pallL
Unto to her at least he is all in allM
-
What though false friends should turn asideN
Or chill with icy lookO
What though he meet the pitying prideN
The proud heart ill can brookO
There are depths of love in one gentle heartD
Whose faith with death alone will partD
-
Aye well may thy brow relax its gloomP
For a talisman hast thouH
Gainst hopes that are blighted in their bloomP
Gainst scornful look or browH
Her heart is a high and a holy throneF
Where monarch supreme thou reignest aloneF
-
Kindly return her tender gazeK
Press closely that little handQ
Whisper fond words and soothing praiseK
They are ever at thy commandQ
It is all the harvest she asks to reapR
In return for love as the ocean deepR
