Another pang for Southern heartsA
That of late so oft have bledB
Another name to add to the rollC
Of their mighty patriot deadB
A vacant place mid that phalanx proudD
Of which each glorious nameE
Is dear to a mighty nation s heartF
And dear to undying fameE
-
The God given gift of genius hisG
The patriot s holy fireH
For he we mourn was a worthy sonI
Of a great and glorious sireH
Ah whate er the changes time may bringJ
Shall never pass awayK
From the people s mind in North or SouthL
The deathless name of ClayK
-
Yet an exile in a foreign landM
His spirit passed from earthN
Far from the old dear scenes of homeO
The loved land of his birthN
The land he had well and truly servedP
With heart with sword with penQ
Since first he had joined the march of lifeR
By the side of his fellow menQ
-
No Southern breezes soft and sweetS
Played around his dying bedB
No Southern flowers in glowing bloomT
Rich fragrance round him shedB
The wintry light of a Northern skyU
Earth robed in snowy vestV
Were the scenes that met his yearning gazeW
As he passed into his restV
-
But near him gathered devoted heartsA
Wife children at his sideX
Wept bitter tears while hushed they lookedY
With fond revering prideX
On him who had ever been to themZ
Throughout his life s careerA2
A model of all that honor highU
Or virtue holds most dearA2
-
And other mourners leaves he tooB2
Who had learned to love him wellC2
Though short the time since he had comeD2
Within our midst to dwellC2
Friends who will keep his name fore erH
Mid those they we set apartF
To cherish deeply and revereA2
Within their inmost heartF
