Glitt ring balls and thoughtless revelsA
Fill up now each misspent nightB
Tis the reign of pride and follyC
The Carnival is at its heightB
Every thought for siren pleasureD
And its sinful feverish mirthE
Who can find one moment s leisureD
For aught else save things of earthE
-
But see sudden stillness fallingF
O er those revels late so loudG
And a hush comes quickly overD
All the maddened giddy crowdG
For a voice from out our churchesH
Has proclaimed in words that burnI
Only dust art thou proud mortalJ
And to dust shall thou returnI
-
And behold Religion scattersH
Dust and ashes on each browK
Thus replacing gem and flowerD
With that lowly symbol nowK
On the forehead fair of beautyC
And on manhood s front of prideL
Rich and poor and spirit wearyC
All receive it side by sideL
-
And the hearts that throbbed so wildlyC
For vain pleasure s dreams aloneM
For its gilded gauds and folliesH
Now at length have calmer grownM
Oh that voice with heavenly powerD
Through each restless breast hath thrilledN
And our churches late so lonelyC
Now with contrite hearts are filledN
-
Fair and lovely are our altarsH
With their starry tapers brightB
With dim clouds of fragrant incenseH
Fair young choristers in whiteB
And the dying gleam of day lightB
With its blushing crimson glowO
Streaming through the lofty casementB
On the kneeling crowd belowO
-
Tis an hour of golden promiseH
For the hearts that secret burnI
With contrite and anxious wishesH
To the Father to returnI
For a Saviour full of mercyC
On His altar throne is thereP
Waiting but that they should ask HimQ
For response to whispered prayerP
