An Afternoon In July Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIKLAMA BNBOGPGQ GRGRLELE

How hushed and still are earth and airA
How languid neath the sun s fierce rayB
Drooping and faint the flowrets fairA
On this hot sultry summer dayB
Vainly I watch the streamlet blueC
That near my cottage home doth passD
No ripple stirs its azure hueC
Still waveless as a sheet of glassD
-
And if I woo from yonder treesE
A breath of coolness for my browF
They ve none to give not e en a breezeE
Rustles amid their foliage nowF
Yes hush there stirred a leaf but noG
Tis only some poor panting birdH
With silenced note head drooping lowG
That mid the shady green boughs stirredH
-
Oh dear how sultry vain to seekI
To while the time with pleasant bookJ
Soon drowsy head and crimsoned cheekI
Oblivious o er its pages droopK
And motion is beyond my powerL
While breathing this hot scorching airA
It wearies me to raise the flowersM
That lie so close beside my chairA
-
See stealing wearied from their playB
The flushed and languid children comeN
Saying that on so hot a dayB
They d much prefer to stay at homeO
Themselves upon the ground they throwG
Cheeks pillowed on each rounded armP
And fall asleep soon murmuring lowG
And wondering why it is so warmQ
-
If yonder patient sheep and kineG
Close shrinking from the sun s hot flameR
Had man s gift power of speech divineG
They surely would repeat the sameR
Each blade of grass each fainting flowerL
Would whisper to the shrubs and treesE
How much they longed for evening s hourL
With cooling breath and grateful breezeE
