The noontide sun streamed brightly downA
Moriah s mountain crestB
The golden blaze of his vivid raysC
Tinged sacred Jordan s breastB
While towering palms and flowerets sweetD
Drooped low neath Syria s burning heatD
-
In the sunny glare of the sultry airE
Toiled up the mountain sideF
The Patriarch sage in stately ageG
And a youth in health s gay prideF
Bearing in eyes and in features fairE
The stamp of his mother s beauty rareE
-
She had not known when one rosy dawnH
Ere they started on their wayI
She had smoothed with care his clustering hairE
And knelt with him to prayI
That his father s hand and will alikeJ
Were nerved at his young heart to strikeJ
-
The Heavenly Power that with such dowerK
Of love fills a mother s heartL
Ardent and pure that can all endureM
Of her life itself a partL
Knew too well that love beyond all priceN
To ask of her such a sacrificeN
-
Though the noble boy with laughing joyO
Had borne up the mountain roadP
The altar wood which in mournful moodQ
His sire had helped to loadP
Type of Him who dragged up CalvaryR
The cross on which he was doomed to dieS
-
The hot breath of noon began full soonT
On his youthful frame to tellU
On the ivory brow flushed wearied nowV
It laid its burning spellU
And listless languid he journeyed onW
The smiles from his lips and bright eyes goneH
-
Once did he say on their toilsome wayI
Father no victim is nearX
But with heavy sigh and tear dimmed eyeS
In accents sad though clearX
Abraham answered The Lord our guideF
A fitting sacrifice will provideF
-
The altar made and the fuel laidY
Lo the victim stretched thereonH
Is Abraham s son his only oneZ
Who at morning s blushing dawnH
Had started with smiles that care defiedF
To travel on at his father s sideF
-
With grief struck brow the Patriarch nowV
Bares the sharp and glittering knifeA2
On that mournful pyre oh hapless sireB2
Must he take his darling s lifeA2
Will fails not though his eyes are dimC2
God gave his boy he belongs to himC2
-
With anguish riven he casts towards HeavenZ
One look imploring wildD2
That doth mutely pray for strength to slayI
His own his only childD2
When forth on the air swells a glad commandE2
And an angel stays his trembling handE2
-
The offering done the sire and sonZ
Come down Moriah s steepF2
Joy gleaming now on Abraham s browV
In his heart thanksgiving deepF2
While with love from His lofty and glorious ThroneG2
Heaven s King hath smiled on sire and sonZ
