The noontide sun streamed brightly down	A
Moriah s mountain crest	B
The golden blaze of his vivid rays	C
Tinged sacred Jordan s breast	B
While towering palms and flowerets sweet	D
Drooped low neath Syria s burning heat	D

In the sunny glare of the sultry air	E
Toiled up the mountain side	F
The Patriarch sage in stately age	G
And a youth in health s gay pride	F
Bearing in eyes and in features fair	E
The stamp of his mother s beauty rare	E

She had not known when one rosy dawn	H
Ere they started on their way	I
She had smoothed with care his clustering hair	E
And knelt with him to pray	I
That his father s hand and will alike	J
Were nerved at his young heart to strike	J

The Heavenly Power that with such dower	K
Of love fills a mother s heart	L
Ardent and pure that can all endure	M
Of her life itself a part	L
Knew too well that love beyond all price	N
To ask of her such a sacrifice	N

Though the noble boy with laughing joy	O
Had borne up the mountain road	P
The altar wood which in mournful mood	Q
His sire had helped to load	P
Type of Him who dragged up Calvary	R
The cross on which he was doomed to die	S

The hot breath of noon began full soon	T
On his youthful frame to tell	U
On the ivory brow flushed wearied now	V
It laid its burning spell	U
And listless languid he journeyed on	W
The smiles from his lips and bright eyes gone	H

Once did he say on their toilsome way	I
Father no victim is near	X
But with heavy sigh and tear dimmed eye	S
In accents sad though clear	X
Abraham answered The Lord our guide	F
A fitting sacrifice will provide	F
	-
The altar made and the fuel laid	Y
Lo the victim stretched thereon	H
Is Abraham s son his only one	Z
Who at morning s blushing dawn	H
Had started with smiles that care defied	F
To travel on at his father s side	F

With grief struck brow the Patriarch now	V
Bares the sharp and glittering knife	A2
On that mournful pyre oh hapless sire	B2
Must he take his darling s life	A2
Will fails not though his eyes are dim	C2
God gave his boy he belongs to him	C2

With anguish riven he casts towards Heaven	Z
One look imploring wild	D2
That doth mutely pray for strength to slay	I
His own his only child	D2
When forth on the air swells a glad command	E2
And an angel stays his trembling hand	E2
	-
The offering done the sire and son	Z
Come down Moriah s steep	F2
Joy gleaming now on Abraham s brow	V
In his heart thanksgiving deep	F2
While with love from His lofty and glorious Throne	G2
Heaven s King hath smiled on sire and son	Z
