Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCE AFAFGBGB AHAHIJII KLMLANON PQPQRORO OBOBSTSU

Oh gladly do we welcome theeA
Fair pleasant month of MayB
Month which we ve eager longed to seeA
Through many a wintry dayB
And now with countless budding flowersC
With sunshine bright and clearD
To gild the quickly fleeting hoursC
At length sweet month thou rt hereE
-
But yet we do not welcome theeA
Because thy genial breathF
Hath power our sleeping land to freeA
From winter s clasp of deathF
Nor yet because fair flowers are springingG
Beneath thy genial rayB
And thousand happy birds are singingG
All welcome to thee MayB
-
No higher nobler cause have weA
These bright days to rejoiceH
Twas God ordained that thou should st beA
The loved month of our choiceH
It is because thou hast been givenI
To honor her aloneJ
The ever gentle Queen of HeavenI
The mother of God s sonI
-
The blossoms that we joyous cullK
By bank or silver streamL
The fragrant hawthorn boughs we pullM
Most sacred too we deemL
For not amid our tresses weA
Their op ning buds will twineN
But garlands fair we ll weave with careO
For Mary s lowly shrineN
-
And when the twilight shades descendP
On earth so hushed and stillQ
And the lone night bird s soft notes blendP
With breeze from glade and hillQ
We seek her shrine with loving heartR
And humbly kneeling thereO
We linger long loth to departR
From that sweet place of prayerO
-
Oh who can tell with what gifts rareO
Our Mother will repayB
Their love who honor thus with careO
Her own sweet month of MayB
A grace for every flower they ve broughtS
Or Ave they have saidT
And ev ry pious holy thoughtS
Shall be by her repaidU
