On a golden autumn morningA
Just fifty years agoB
When harvests ripe lay smilingA
In the sunshine s yellow glowB
A pious group was standingA
Round the lighted altar s flameC
In the humble convent chapelD
Of the Nuns of Notre DameC
-
A girl of fifteen summersE
With gentle serious airF
In novice garb of purpleD
Was humbly kneeling thereF
Uttering the vows so bindingA
Whose magic power sufficedG
To make that child like maidenH
The well loved Bride of ChristG
-
No troubled anxious shadowB
O er clouded that young browI
As with look and voice unfalteringA
She breathed her solemn vowI
No regretful glances cast sheJ
On the pomps that she had spurnedK
Nor the dream of love and pleasureL
From which she had coldly turnedK
-
-
-
Fifty years of joy and sorrowB
Since that day have o er her flownM
Years of words and deeds of mercyJ
Living but for God aloneM
And again a group is standingA
By this holy scene enticedG
To renew the golden bridalD
Of this faithful spouse of ChristG
-
True her brow has lost the smoothnessN
And her cheek the fresh young glowB
That adorned them on that autumnO
Morning fifty years agoB
But oh think not that her BridegroomP
Loves her anything the lessQ
He sees but the inward beautyJ
And the spirit s lovelinessQ
-
Cloister honors long have fallenH
Ceaseless constant to her lotR
But like cloister honors fallingA
Unto one who sought them notR
Daughter meek of the great FoundressQ
Of thy honored house and nameC
Worthy art thou to be AbbessQ
Of the nuns of Notre DameC
