A Modern Courtship Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGHHII JJKKLL MMNNOO PPQQOO RRSSTT HHUUOO

Why turn from me thus with such petulant prideA
When I ask thee sweet Edith to be my brideA
When I offer the gift of heart fond and trueB
And with loyalty seek thy young love to wooB
With patience I ve waited from week unto weekC
And at length I must openly candidly speakC
-
But why dost thou watch me in doubting surpriseD
Why thus dost thou raise thy dark deep melting eyesD
Can st thou wonder I love thee when for the last yearE
We have whispered and flirted told each hope and fearE
When I ve lavished on thee presents costly and gayF
And kissed thy fair hands at least six times each dayF
-
What Do I hear right So those long sunny hoursG
Spent wand ring in woods or whispering in bowersG
Our love making ardent in prose and in rhymeH
Was just only a method of passing the timeH
A harmless flirtation the fashion just nowI
To be closed by a smile or a jest or a bowI
-
Ah believe me fair Edith with me twas not soJ
And I would I had known this but six months agoJ
I would not have wasted on false luring smilesK
On graces coquettish and cold studied wilesK
True love that would give thee a life for thy lifeL
And guarded and prized thee a fond worshipped wifeL
-
Oh I thou rt pleased now to whisper my manners are goodM
And my smiles such as maiden s heart rarely withstoodM
My age just the thing nor too young nor too oldN
My character faultless naught lacking but goldN
And to day might I claim e en thy beauty so rareO
If good Uncle John would but make me his heirO
-
Many thanks my best Edith I now understandP
For what thou art willing to barter thy handP
A palace like mansion with front of brown stoneQ
In some splendid quarter to fashion well knownQ
S vres china conservatory furniture rareO
Unlimited pin money phaeton and pairO
-
It is well gentle lady The price is not highR
With a figure like thine such a hand such an eyeR
Most brilliant accomplishments statuesque faceS
Manners carriage distingu and queenlike in graceS
Nothing wanting whatever save only a heartT
But instead double portions of cunning and artT
-
Ah well for me lady I have learned in good timeH
To save myself misery you sordid crimeH
I will garner the love that so lately was thineU
For one who can give me a love true as mineU
But learn ere we part Edith peerless and fairO
Uncle John has just died and has left me his heirO
