Thou art home at last my darling oneA
Flushed and tired with thy playB
From morning dawn until setting sunA
Hast thou been at sport awayB
And thy steps are weary hot thy browC
Yet thine eyes with joy are brightD
Ah I read the riddle show me nowC
The treasures thou graspest tightD
-
A pretty pebble a tiny shellE
A feather by wild bird castF
Gay flowers gathered in forest dellE
Already withering fastF
Four speckled eggs in a soft brown nestG
Thy last and thy greatest prizeH
Such the things that fill with joy thy breastG
With laughing light thine eyesH
-
Ah my child what right have I to smileI
And whisper too dearly boughtJ
By wand ring many a weary mileI
Dust heat and toilsome thoughtK
For we the children of riper yearsL
Task aching heart and brainM
Waste yearning hopes and anxious fearsL
On baubles just as vainM
-
For empty title ribbon or starN
For worshipped and much sought goldO
How men will struggle at home afarN
And suffer toils untoldO
Plodding their narrow and earth bound wayB
Amid restless care and strifeP
Wasting not merely a fleeting dayB
But the precious years of lifeP
-
And thou fair child with to morrow s dawnQ
Wilt rise up calm and gladR
To cull wild flowers mid wood and lawnQ
Untroubled by memory sadR
But alas the worldly wise of earthS
When life s last bonds are rivenA
Will find that for things of meanest worthS
They ve lost both Life and HeavenA
