Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJ KLMNAOPQROSTUV TWXYZA2B2N

If they had hair it was grayA
the backs of their hands wormyB
currents of blue veins old menC
the undertaker believedD
had already lost too muchE
to the earth to be botheredF
by what they found didn't findG
brought there that May afternoonH
dogwood trees bloomed like white wreathsI
across Jocassee's valleyJ
-
They took their time sought the shadeK
when they tired let cigarettesL
and silence fill the minutesM
until the undertakerN
nodded at his watch and theyA
worked again the only soundO
the rasp and shuck of shovelsP
as they settled deeper in gravesQ
twice dug sounding for the thudR
of struck wood not always foundO
sometimes something other silkS
scarf or tie buckle buttonT
nestled in some darker earthU
enough to give a name toV
-
One quit before they were doneT
lay down as if death were nowW
too close to resist and soX
another stepped in his graveY
finished up but not beforeZ
they shut his eyes laid him withA2
all the others to be savedB2
if not from death from waterN
