Then I'd best make sureB
Be on the safe side as it wereC
Ah theres been a mistake The hairD
you see its black now Stephens fairD
Whats that The explosionA
Of course burnt black Silly of meE
I should have known Then lets get onF

The face is that the face maskG
that mask of charred woodH
blistered scarred couldH
that have been a child's faceI
The sweater where intact looksJ
in fact all too familiarC
But one must be sureB

The scoutbelt Yes thats hisK
I recognise the studs he hammered inL
not a week ago At the ageM
when boys get clothes consciousN
now you know Its almostO
certainly Stephen But one mustP
be sure Remove all trace of doubtQ
Pull out every splinter of hopeR

Pockets Empty the pocketsS
Handkerchief Could be any schoolboy'sS
Dirty enough CigarettesS
Oh this can't be StephenA
I dont allow him to smoke you seeS
He wouldn't disobey me Not his fatherC
But that's his penknife Thats his alrightT
And thats his key on the keyringG
Gran gave him just the other nightT
Then this must be himU

I think I know what happenedV
about the cigarettesS
No doubt he was minding themW
for one of the older boysS
Yes thats itX
Thats himU
