O GREY and dewy TwilightA
Thou who comest softly bringingB
Silence sweeter than all musicC
Song of bird or mortal singingB
Thou who walkest with thy shadowsD
Through the mountains and the meadowsD
Hither come hither comeE
For the morn was dull and drearyF
And the noon was hot and wearyF
And the hours that followed afterG
Were too full of care for laughterG
And too full of toil for many and too full of tears for someE
O grey and dewy TwilightA
There are those within the forestH
Who are waiting for thy comingB
And the potions that thou pourestH
Bringing balm to feathered bosomE
Wilted leaf and withered blossomE
Bid them sleep bid them sleepI
For their morn was dull and drearyF
And their noon was hot and wearyF
And the hours that followed brought themJ
Arid winds that evil wrought themJ
For the crushing heat lay heavy on each little flower and breastH
O grey and dewy TwilightH
There are those in town and cityF
Who are ailing ailing for theeF
For thou hast the balm of pityF
And the cooling calm that lingersK
In a mother's gentle fingersK
Soothe them so soothe them soL
For their morn was dull and drearyF
And their noon was hot and wearyF
And the hours that followed afterG
Were too full of toil for laughterG
And too full of want for many and for some too full of woeL
O grey and dewy TwilightH
There is one thou dost resembleM
And I feel that 'neath her footstepsN
Even now the airs do trembleM
And the shadows fly before herG
And the silent stars bend o'er herG
As she nears as she nearsO
Man and maid to joyance wooingB
Doves in concert with her cooingB
Round about her love and laughterG
Golden plenty speeding afterG
And a magic in her presence to make sweet the salt of tearsP
