Tidings Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGHGHIJIJ KLKLMNMNOPOPQRQN

THE darkness gripped us hot intenseA
The sea snored like some sleeping bruteB
We stood alert with every senseA
Like some leashed hound nerve thrilled acuteB
About us clammy dew made wetC
The thin green leaves and sleeping flowersD
Strained eyes against the night we setC
Strained ears like open doors were oursD
No sight save when across the blackE
Broad breast of night fierce lightning toreF
A ragged gash a serpent trackE
And thunder answered the sea's snoreF
One sighed and one would no more standG
At easeless rest but drooping walkedH
Then though none spoke one raised his handG
As if to silence tongues that talkedH
We heard it On the granite groundI
It sounded nigh and on the beachJ
It grew remote upon that soundI
With seeking eyes each questioned eachJ
Grouped close like men of carven stoneK
Chilled stone we stood with rooted feetL
'He comes What news ' Not hoofs aloneK
In that tense moment swiftly beatL
Cried one 'Joy rides at such a paceM
Joy swift of hoof and light as air 'N
Said one eyes sunk and pallid faceM
'So too at times rides dread Despair 'N
We waited vexed by dumb surmiseO
Eyes wide lips wide tense faces whiteP
Ears served till ears gave place to eyesO
Sound likewise yielding unto sightP
He came with headlong speed and dashQ
Fierce lightning lighting land and seaR
And in that red revealing flashQ
He rose and shouted 'Victory 'N
