The Turn Of The Road Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDEDFGFGHIHIJKJK LMLMNONOPCPEQRQRSTST UVUVHIHIWBVBWHERE confident calm I strode | A |
I walk with hesitant feet | B |
For at yonder turn of the road | A |
What shall I meet | B |
The youth of the day has gone | C |
And my shadow goes before | D |
I know that the road runs on | E |
I know no more | D |
I have travelled a goodly way | F |
As one at a glance may see | G |
Since the East and the break o' day | F |
Called out to me | G |
Though the highway be hard to miss | H |
With its signs and stones and such | I |
The worst of the road is this | H |
It turns too much | I |
For a part of its length it flows | J |
Too brief is that stretch alas | K |
'Twixt hedges of palm and rose | J |
O'er fern and grass | K |
The butterfly fancies flit | L |
On their lit wings gossamer frail | M |
And a host of roysterers sit | L |
At cakes and ale | M |
With the flight of their glory hour | N |
The Fancies flutter and die | O |
And the nectared heart of the flower | N |
Grows sere and dry | O |
Though the cakes and ale are done | P |
And the roysterer's moment gone | C |
Yet under the slanting sun | P |
The road winds on | E |
Good bye to the flower and fern | Q |
And the hedges at each grass side | R |
Maybe at the next road turn | Q |
New pleasures hide | R |
New pleasures 'Tis turned and lo | S |
Hot miles and a driving dust | T |
'Twixt trees that are grey as woe | S |
Gnarled limbs out thrust | T |
Yet Hope is a bright allure | U |
A light in the hearts of men | V |
At the end of a league for sure | U |
'Twill turn again | V |
Though the highway be hard to miss | H |
With its signs and stones and such | I |
The best of the road is this | H |
It turns so much | I |
Towards the turn of the roadway you | W |
I walk with hesitant feet | B |
When I come to the turn anon | V |
What shall I meet | B |
