WHERE confident calm I strodeA
I walk with hesitant feetB
For at yonder turn of the roadA
What shall I meetB
The youth of the day has goneC
And my shadow goes beforeD
I know that the road runs onE
I know no moreD
I have travelled a goodly wayF
As one at a glance may seeG
Since the East and the break o' dayF
Called out to meG
Though the highway be hard to missH
With its signs and stones and suchI
The worst of the road is thisH
It turns too muchI
For a part of its length it flowsJ
Too brief is that stretch alasK
'Twixt hedges of palm and roseJ
O'er fern and grassK
The butterfly fancies flitL
On their lit wings gossamer frailM
And a host of roysterers sitL
At cakes and aleM
With the flight of their glory hourN
The Fancies flutter and dieO
And the nectared heart of the flowerN
Grows sere and dryO
Though the cakes and ale are doneP
And the roysterer's moment goneC
Yet under the slanting sunP
The road winds onE
Good bye to the flower and fernQ
And the hedges at each grass sideR
Maybe at the next road turnQ
New pleasures hideR
New pleasures 'Tis turned and loS
Hot miles and a driving dustT
'Twixt trees that are grey as woeS
Gnarled limbs out thrustT
Yet Hope is a bright allureU
A light in the hearts of menV
At the end of a league for sureU
'Twill turn againV
Though the highway be hard to missH
With its signs and stones and suchI
The best of the road is thisH
It turns so muchI
Towards the turn of the roadway youW
I walk with hesitant feetB
When I come to the turn anonV
What shall I meetB
