The Threshold Stone Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCBADEEDAFBBFAGHHG ABIIBAJKKLABMMBANOOP

WHEN I went to live in the little houseA
That stands on the hilltop aloneB
What touched me most of allC
Was neither roof nor wallC
But the smooth worn face of its old threshold stoneB
For when I entered that little houseA
With its four rooms cool in the heatD
And its windows clean and brightE
There it lay new washed and whiteE
With its tale of the coming and the going of feetD
Then I lost count of time in that little houseA
And the world and its things all aboutF
And I hearkened there aloneB
To the footfalls on that stoneB
Of the young coming in and the old going outF
And the folk that had dwelt in that little houseA
They were mute spectre mute at my sideG
The young man strong and boldH
And the grey man wise and oldH
And the little pinched woman and the new made brideG
Oh often in haste to that little houseA
Came love in the night time aloneB
And dallied there a whileI
With a little wistful smileI
And with feather weight feet on the old threshold stoneB
And men hurried home to that little houseA
When the round of the daytime was o'erJ
With its worry heat and noiseK
And kissed their girls and boysK
And the patient little mothers that waited at the doorL
Though I dwell now no more in that little houseA
That stands on the hilltop aloneB
Yet this I got from itM
This human story writM
On the smooth worn face of its old threshold stoneB
Though they take stone from stone in that little houseA
Making litter of all it has beenN
Yet they shall not destroyO
All the grief all the joyO
All the youth all the love that its threshold has seenP
