ALL four of us were inland bornA
And inland reared from birth were weB
And though the tale be food for scornA
We four had never seen the SeaB
We saw the sun by day by nightC
The stars threw down their radiance keenD
These things were held a goodly sightC
But still the Sea remained unseenD
The sunlit plains about us spreadE
Mile after mile on every sideF
But still the sea wise people saidE
The blue salt waste was wondrous wideF
On lonely rides and desert trampsG
And when we searched in rain and dewH
The breathing dark of cattle campsI
A longing came and thrilled us throughH
We dreamt of waters spreading farJ
Of winding bay and shining reachK
Of shouting reef and growling barJ
And breakers crashing down a beachK
The longing grew we could not restL
A vision beautiful and braveM
Allured us to a mighty questL
Of rolling sea and crested waveM
All four of us were inland bornA
And inland reared from birth were weB
We mounted early in the mornA
And riding gaily sought the SeaB
We rode by day and camped by nightC
And night and day dreamed evermoreN
Of dawns that broke in rosy lightC
On curling wave and crescent shoreN
The red sun sank upon our questL
The shadows fell and in the darkO
There was no light in East or WestL
Save where our camp fire burned a sparkO
At times it seemed that we could hearP
The sound of breakers in their fallQ
We drew our reins and hand to earP
We listened to the distant callQ
A stillness reigned from East to WestL
The trees and mountains seemed to swoonR
And weirdly paling in the WestL
Went down a late and lonely moonR
And while the white moon slowly fellS
A scented breeze of morning blewH
Though inland born we knew it wellS
That odour keen and strange and newH
Then something seemed to burst its chainsT
A wave of joy and wonder brokeU
Across our souls and in our veinsT
An ancient Viking stirred and wokeU
A sound of breakers came to stirV
Our blood and thrill us with delightC
And neck and neck with whip and spurV
We galloped headlong through the nightC
The moon had sunk but in the skyW
We saw the Dawn's first light of greyX
And straight as feathered arrows flyW
We thundered on to meet the DayX
Afar we saw the shore line loomY
Our horses springing freely strodeZ
And suddenly in purple gloomY
The sea gave greeting as we rodeZ
We galloped on nor ever ceasedA2
Till gloriously in golden fireV
The sun uprose and in the EastA2
We reached the goal of our desireV
We pushed our horses through the foamB2
The breakers swirled about their kneesC2
And underneath the golden domeB2
We shouted to the Morning SeasC2
