THE merrymaking's over	A
The riverside is still	B
The Sun a radiant rover	A
Gone down behind the hill	B
The red Road goes awinding	C
Along the riverside	D
The River no man minding	C
Winds on to meet the tide	D
O Naiad of green places	E
I pray you pause and say	F
How many pretty faces	E
Looked down on you to day	F
The River runs in silence	G
A fern frond is her load	H
Just here and just a mile hence	I
She curves to kiss the road	H
And now the kiss is over	A
And now the tryst is done	J
By flats of fern and clover	A
The River ripples on	K
Again the Road turns to her	A
Red winding through the green	L
The Road would pause and woo her	A
But gray rocks stand between	L
And here he rounds a boulder	A
And hurries to her side	D
The River turns her shoulder	A
She will not be his bride	D
O fickle River straying	C
Through green lands on and on	K
A fern tree heard you saying	C
'The Road will come anon '	M
Not so but you will waken	J
To lonely days and sore	N
The Road a vow has taken	J
To play Love's fool no more	N
On high the sunset lingers	O
With one still star above	P
And there the merry singers	O
Sing silverly of Love	P
And now in distance dewy	Q
They halt awhile and so	R
Wave hands with 'Coo ee Coo ee '	M
Ho laggard down below '	M
If she should cease to worry	Q
And say 'I love but you'	S
'O hurry hurry hurry '	M
And 'Adieu Adieu Adieu '	M
This one last chance I give her	A
To lighten my heart's load	H
And if she play the River	A
Then I shall prove the Road	H
I caught her heard her sighing	C
And felt the moment's charm	T
'Tis sweet when day is dying	C
To walk so arm in arm	T
