WITHIN the world a second worldA
That circles ceaselesslyB
Stars in the sky and sister starsC
Turn in your eyes and seeB
-
Tides of the sea that rise and fallD
Aheave from Pole to PoleE
And kindred swayings veiled but feltF
That noise along the soulE
-
Yon moon noon rich high throned remoteG
And pale with pride extremeH
Draws up the sea but what white moonI
Exalts the tide of DreamH
-
The Fisher Folk who cast their netsJ
In Vision s golden tideK
Oft bring to light misshapen shellsL
And nothing worth besideK
-
And so their worn hands droop adownI
Their singing throats are dumbM
The Inner Deep withholds its pearlsN
Till turn of tide be comeM
-
But patience wait the good tide turnsO
The waters inward setP
And lo behold aleap aliveQ
With glowing fish the netP
-
O Toilers of the Hidden SeasR
Ye have strange gain and lossS
Dragging the Deeps of Soul for pearlsN
And ofttimes netting drossS
-
Flushed to the lips with golden lightT
And dark with sable gloomU
Thrilled by a thousand melodiesR
And silent like a tombU
-
Fierce are the winds across your realmV
As though some Demon veiledW
Had loosed the gales of Spirit landX
To ravage ways unsailedX
-
But still sweet hours befall at timesY
Rich lit and full of easeR
The afterglow is like the lightX
Of sunset on tired seasR
-
And worse perhaps may be the lotX
Of those whose fate is sleepZ
The sodden souls without a tideX
Dense as a rotten deepZ
-
Pain paves the way for keener joyA2
And wondrous thoughts uprollE
When the large moon of Peace looks downI
On high tide in the soulE
