ONCE upon a timeA
Little Golden HeadB
Steeples used to chimeA
And their chiming saidB
'Peace is in the landC
Joy on every hand 'D
Glowing youths and menE
Rose and went their waysF
Some to hill and glenE
Some to shining baysF
And they left behindG
Ills of heart and mindG
Oh but it was sweetH
Underneath the treesI
Bare of throat and feetH
Bathed in golden easeI
Two and two to lieJ
While the hours went byJ
Sweet indeed it wasK
Thus to lie and lazeK
Couched upon the grassK
Through the shining daysK
Sweet to breathe the airL
Free of toil and careL
On the beaches thenE
Sporting with the seaK
Gathered brown limbed menE
Graced like statuaryK
Chiselled by some boldM
Master hand of oldM
All were guests of JoyN
All his sportive clanO
Here a shouting boyN
There a jesting manO
While the breakers hymnedM
Braving them stout limbedM
Listen Golden HeadM
Came a Wondrous OneP
Unto each and saidM
'Look on me my sonP
Am I not aboveQ
All things else you love 'D
Then that love beganO
Which is more than lifeR
More than love of manO
Love of maid or wifeR
Love of queen or kingS
Aught or anythingS
Little Golden HeadM
Is it well to tellT
How they wrought and bledM
How they fought and fellT
In their glowing primeA
Once upon a timeA
Nay but it is writM
That such things must beK
Oh the shame of itM
Oh the tragedyK
Oh the days of rueU
Oh the glory tooU
Little Golden HeadM
By the skies aboveQ
By our honoured deadM
You shall know that loveQ
Know and hold the timeA
When 'twas born sublimeA
