O DID you see a troop go byA
Way weary and oppressedB
Dead kisses on the drooping lipC
And a dead heart in the breastB
-
Yea I have seen them one by oneD
Way weary and oppressedB
And when I asked them Whither speedE
They answered To the WestB
-
And were they pale as pale could beF
Death pale with haunted eyesG
And did you see the hot white dustH
Range round their feet and riseG
-
Oh they were pale as pale could beF
And pale as an embered leafI
The hot white dust had risen butJ
They laid it with their griefI
-
Did no one say the way is longK
And crave a little restB
Oh no they said The night is nighA
Our camp is in the WestB
-
And did pain pierce their feet as thoughL
The way with thorns were setM
And were they visited by strangeN
Dark angels of regretM
-
Oh yea and some were mute as deathO
Though shot by many a dartP
With them the salt of inward tearsQ
Went stinging through the heartP
-
And how are these wayfarers calledR
And whither do they wendS
The Weary Hearted and their roadT
At sunset hath and endS
-
Shed tears for them Nay nay no tearsQ
They yearn for endless restB
Perhaps large stars will burn aboveU
Their camp within the WestB
