SHE is standing at the gateA
Tall and sweetB
And although the hour be lateA
She will greetB
Me her loverC
Smiling overC
Absent mind and tardy feetB
-
Rest I ll say to her and more restD
As she wraps her love around meE
And I ll tell her of the forestF
Of the strange fear haunted forestF
Where the fleshless beings found meE
-
For I trod a rock strewn rude wayG
Thinking only of my loverC
When the moonlight on the woodwayG
Made a weird way of the woodwayG
And a place where demons hoverC
-
For the leaves that had been sleepingH
On the sodden soil bed lyingH
Look a motion and gan creepingH
Like a thousand small feet creepingH
And there rose a distant sighingH
-
Why the trees did droop their tressesI
Weeping leaves for something underC
And what bode in dim recessesJ
Feline lurked in dim recessesJ
Paled my cheeks and heart to ponderC
-
Had I feet I would have hurriedK
But the moonlit forest chained meE
Soul and body grasped and worriedK
With frost fingers gripped and worriedK
Till half stayed my hurt heart pained meE
-
Rest I ll say my Love and more restD
Things unseen have life and motionL
And they haunt the moonlit forestF
Soul affronting haunt the forestF
And men meet them on the oceanL
-
She will look so grave and kindM
Saying RestD
Rest is here for heart and mindM
On this breastD
Put aside allN
Fancies idleO
I will shield you Love is bestD
