BANNISTER who lived for gainA
Counting love and mateship weakB
Bannister of Coolah CreekB
Once and once alone 'tis saidC
Bent his knees and bowed his headC
Praying God to send him rainA
Sheep and cattle were to himD
Pounds and pence in wool and hideE
That and nothing more besideE
Gain and gain alone he soughtF
Bought and sold and sold and boughtG
Bannister the shrewd and grimD
Drought might slay his neighbour's sheepH
Leave his friends with stricken landsI
Starving stock and empty handsI
Driving them to ruin's brinkJ
Not by so much as a winkJ
Did it cause him loss of sleepH
Loving neither man nor maidK
Man and maid no pity showedL
When the Drought red handed strodeL
Through the land and spared him notG
Then it was by all forgotG
Bannister knelt down and prayedK
Hands entreatingly out thrownM
Head and shoulders bowed with careN
Bannister sent up his prayerN
Did that prayer include a friendO
Nay but selfish to the endO
For himself he prayed aloneM
Scarce a stone's throw from his doorP
Coolah Creek dry bedded layQ
Day and night and night and dayQ
Staring skyward stark and dumbR
In its single river gumR
Sang the shepherd bird no moreP
Praying long and low there ranS
Through his mind a vision sweetT
Waters singing at his feetT
And his words a torrent pouredU
'Open Thou Thy floodgates LordU
Lest I be a ruined man 'V
Then he rose and sought his bedC
Sighing as he sank to sleepH
While without his famished sheepH
In the darkness moaned their woeW
And his cattle lowing lowW
Sagged with droop of eye and headC
Dreams were his with splendour litX
Happy dreams of days to beY
While his prayer limped leadenlyW
Through cold spaces drear and loneM
Till at last it reached God's throneM
And God bending answered itX
Hot and still the darkness wasZ
Hushed and hot the midnight airN
Drought and death were everywhereN
Thirst and hunger pain and griefA2
Stirless hung the wilted leafA2
Motionless the brittle grassB2
Mercy pity seemed aloofC2
God remote and cold to manS
When a whispering beganS
And the sleeper woke to hearD2
Low at first then loud and clearE2
Raindrops drumming on his roofC2
Little things began to stirF2
Little voices filled the nightG2
Whispers murmurings of delightG2
Till the torrent drowned them allW
In the thunder of its fallW
God had answered BannisterF2
Thinking thus his troubles o'erF2
Pleased with God he slept againH2
Bannister unloved of menH2
Loved of God most surely seemedI2
Coolah Creek awakened streamedI2
Scarce a stone's throw from his doorP
Dreaming dreams of gain anewJ2
Bannister reposed at easeK2
Hearing but sweet melodiesK2
Free of loss and free of painA
Gorged and swollen by the rainA
Coolah Creek a giant grewJ2
Foam upon its torrent sweptL2
Leaf and limb went down its floodM2
Like a beast athirst for bloodM2
Through the dark it ramped and ragedN2
Like a lion long encagedN2
Free at last it roared and leaptN2
Then it burst its banks and brokeO2
Bar and barrier in its pathP2
Shouting foaming in its wrathP2
Dreaming dreams of golden gainA
Hides and tallow wool and grainA
Bannister too late awokeO2
Never more to speak and stirF2
Never more to strive and hoardN2
Self and self alone his lordN2
Veins no more with life aglowW
Body washing to and froW
God had answered BannisterF2
