WE galloped down the sodden trackA
Close buttoned 'gainst the windB
I took the lead with whip and spurC
And Arnold rode behindB
-
The skies were wild a rending galeD
Ran roaring through the treesE
It sounded now like shouting hostsF
And now like angry seasE
-
'Spur on Spur on ' I turned and criedG
'The fatal moments fly '-
I cursed him then his trembling handH
I cursed his bloodshot eyeI
-
I cursed him for the lust of drinkJ
That held his will a slaveK
For skill to tend and mend was hisL
To succour and to saveK
-
I thought of her the golden girlM
My life my love nigh spentN
Nigh death with fever clutching herC
And what his coming meantN
-
Through driving rain and tossing treesE
I saw her pale with painO
And if my eyes grew wet perchanceP
'Twas not the wet of rainO
-
I turned on Arnold and I vowedQ
To pay with coin of hateR
His ten mile ride his boasted skillS
If he should prove too lateR
-
I mixed my words with searing scornT
And turned and told him plainO
Of how I found him stupid druggedU
With dull and sluggish brainO
-
And how the wasted hours went byI
I waiting by his sideG
Till he should wake and be himselfV
And mount his horse and rideG
-
And 'Arnold if she die' I saidW
'Be yours the lot accurstW
In life to thirst to thirst in deathX
In Hell to thirst and thirst '-
-
And so with black and bitter wordsY
Close buttoned 'gainst the windW
With whip and spur I galloped onZ
And Arnold rode behindW
-
No word he said no answer gaveK
No bitter curse flung backA
But sagging in the saddle sankA2
A shamed thing in my trackA
-
The skies were lead and leaden rainO
A screen of sullen leadW
A wind blown screen a blinding screenB2
Fell down from overheadW
-
Though cattle die and pastures fadeW
With drought on hill and plainO
'Fore God I pray I may not seeC2
The like of that blind rainO
-
The torn leaves swirled about my headW
The gum trees tall and stoutW
Waved limbs and tossed tormented crestsD2
As in a forest routW
-
The wind was now like hounds a huntW
And now like hounds that whinedW
Yet ever on and on I rodeW
And Arnold rode behindW
-
And soon there rose a mighty noiseE2
Above the wind it roaredW
And bursting through the screen of rainO
We came to Kelvin's FordW
-
I reined my horse in mute amazeF2
A stunned and stricken manG2
For 'twixt me and my heart's own loveH2
A thwarting river ranG2
-
I looked upon its maddened wasteW
I drew a broken breathX
I said ' Tis hopeless ended allI2
To dare the Ford were death '-
-
The wind was like a pack of houndsJ2
Upon a forest huntW
And then I heard a splash of hoofsK2
And Arnold rode in frontW
-
His face was lit I vow 'twas litW
Like glorious evening skiesL2
And as he turned and smiled flashed outW
The manhood from his eyesL2
-
And then I knew that through his soulM2
A dauntless purpose ranG2
As shaking shame and sin asideW
He rose once more a ManG2
-
He fought the river inch by inchN2
Set will against its mightW
Gave way with it and came againO2
And conquered in the fightW
-
And saved Her conquered Death as wellP2
Heart so dull so blindW
Oft times denied his chance in lifeQ2
The hero rides behindW
