O thou who from the mountain's heightA
Roll'st down thy clouds with all their weightB
Of waters to old Niles majestic tideC
Or o'er the dark sepulchral plainD
Recallest thy Palmyra's ancient prideC
Amid whose desolated domesE
Secure the savage chacal roamsE
Where from the fragments of the hallow'd faneD
The Arabs rear their miserable homesE
-
Hear Genius hear thy children's cryF
Not always should'st thou love to broodG
Stern o'er the desert solitudeG
Where seas of sand toss their hot surges highF
Nor Genius should the midnight songH
Detain thee in some milder moodG
The palmy plains amongI
Where Gambia to the torches lightA
Flows radiant thro' the awaken'd nightA
-
Ah linger not to hear the songH
Genius avenge thy children's wrongH
The Daemon COMMERCE on your shoreJ
Pours all the horrors of his trainD
And hark where from the field of goreJ
Howls the hyena o'er the slainD
Lo where the flaming village fires the skiesK
Avenging Power awake ariseK
-
Arise thy children's wrong redressL
Ah heed the mother's wretchednessL
When in the hot infectious airM
O'er her sick babe she bows opprestA
Ah hear her when the Christians tearM
The drooping infant from her breastA
Whelm'd in the waters he shall restA
Hear thou the wretched mother's criesL
Avenging Power awake ariseL
-
By the rank infected airM
That taints those dungeons of despairM
By those who there imprison'd dieA
Where the black herd promiscuous lieA
By the scourges blacken'd o'erN
And stiff and hard with human goreJ
By every groan of deep distressL
By every curse of wretchednessL
By all the train of Crimes that flowO
From the hopelessness of WoeO
By every drop of blood bespiltA
By Afric's wrongs and Europe's guiltA
Awake arise avengeP
-
And thou hast heard and o'er their blood fed plainsL
Swept thine avenging hurricanesL
And bade thy storms with whirlwind roarJ
Dash their proud navies on the shoreJ
And where their armies claim'd the fightA
Wither'd the warrior's mightA
And o'er the unholy host with baneful breathQ
There Genius thou hast breath'd the gales of DeathQ
-
So perish still the robbers of mankindA
What tho' from Justice bound and blindA
Inhuman Power has snatch'd the swordA
What tho' thro' many an ignominious ageR
That Fiend with desolating rageR
The tide of carnage pour'dA
Justice shall yet unclose her eyesL
Terrific yet in wrath ariseL
And trample on the tyrant's breastA
And make Oppresion groan opprestA
