To Contemplation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDDDCEE FGFFGHH ICJCAK LMLNNMLLMM OPPOQQMM EERRBB SSDDTTUUVVWXMM YYDDZZ NNA2A2Faint gleams the evening radiance thro' the sky | A |
The sober twilight dimly darkens round | B |
In short quick circles the shrill bat flits by | A |
And the slow vapour curls along the ground | B |
- | |
Now the pleas'd eye from yon lone cottage sees | C |
On the green mead the smoke long shadowing play | D |
The Red breast on the blossom'd spray | D |
Warbles wild her latest lay | D |
And sleeps along the dale the silent breeze | C |
Calm CONTEMPLATION 'tis thy favorite hour | E |
Come fill my bosom tranquillizing Power | E |
- | |
Meek Power I view thee on the calmy shore | F |
When Ocean stills his waves to rest | G |
Or when slow moving on the surge's hoar | F |
Meet with deep hollow roar | F |
And whiten o'er his breast | G |
For lo the Moon with softer radiance gleams | H |
And lovelier heave the billows in her beams | H |
- | |
When the low gales of evening moan along | I |
I love with thee to feel the calm cool breeze | C |
And roam the pathless forest wilds among | J |
Listening the mellow murmur of the trees | C |
Full foliaged as they lift their arms on high | A |
And wave their shadowy heads in wildest melody | K |
- | |
Or lead me where amid the tranquil vale | L |
The broken stream flows on in silver light | M |
And I will linger where the gale | L |
O'er the bank of violets sighs | N |
Listening to hear its soften'd sounds arise | N |
And hearken the dull beetle's drowsy flight | M |
And watch the horn eyed snail | L |
Creep o'er his long moon glittering trail | L |
And mark where radiant thro' the night | M |
Moves in the grass green hedge the glow worms living light | M |
- | |
Thee meekest Power I love to meet | O |
As oft with even solitary pace | P |
The scatter'd Abbeys hallowed rounds I trace | P |
And listen to the echoings of my feet | O |
Or on the half demolished tomb | Q |
Whole warning texts anticipate my doom | Q |
Mark the clear orb of night | M |
Cast thro' the storying glass a faintly varied light | M |
- | |
Nor will I not in some more gloomy hour | E |
Invoke with fearless awe thine holier power | E |
Wandering beneath the sainted pile | R |
When the blast moans along the darksome aisle | R |
And clattering patters all around | B |
The midnight shower with dreary sound | B |
- | |
But sweeter 'tis to wander wild | S |
By melancholy dreams beguil'd | S |
While the summer moon's pale ray | D |
Faintly guides me on my way | D |
To the lone romantic glen | T |
Far from all the haunts of men | T |
Where no noise of uproar rude | U |
Breaks the calm of solitude | U |
But soothing Silence sleeps in all | V |
Save the neighbouring waterfall | V |
Whose hoarse waters falling near | W |
Load with hollow sounds the ear | X |
And with down dasht torrent white | M |
Gleam hoary thro' the shades of night | M |
- | |
Thus wandering silent on and slow | Y |
I'll nurse Reflection's sacred woe | Y |
And muse upon the perish'd day | D |
When Hope would weave her visions gay | D |
Ere FANCY chill'd by adverse fate | Z |
Left sad REALITY my mate | Z |
- | |
O CONTEMPLATION when to Memory's eyes | N |
The visions of the long past days arise | N |
Thy holy power imparts the best relief | A2 |
And the calm'd Spirit loves the joy of grief | A2 |
