And wherefore do the Poor complainA
The rich man asked of meB
Come walk abroad with me I saidC
And I will answer theeB
-
Twas evening and the frozen streetsD
Were cheerless to beholdE
And we were wrapt and coated wellF
And yet we were a coldE
-
We met an old bare headed manG
His locks were few and whiteH
I ask'd him what he did abroadI
In that cold winter's nightH
-
'Twas bitter keen indeed he saidC
But at home no fire had heB
And therefore he had come abroadI
To ask for charityB
-
We met a young bare footed childJ
And she begg'd loud and boldE
I ask'd her what she did abroadI
When the wind it blew so coldE
-
She said her father was at homeK
And he lay sick a bedC
And therefore was it she was sentL
Abroad to beg for breadC
-
We saw a woman sitting downM
Upon a stone to restN
She had a baby at her backO
And another at her breastN
-
I ask'd her why she loiter'd thereP
When the wind it was so chillQ
She turn'd her head and bade the childJ
That scream'd behind be stillQ
-
She told us that her husband servedR
A soldier far awayS
And therefore to her parish sheB
Was begging back her wayS
-
We met a girl her dress was looseT
And sunken was her eyeU
Who with the wanton's hollow voiceV
Address'd the passers byU
-
I ask'd her what there was in guiltW
That could her heart allureX
To shame disease and late remorseY
She answer'd she was poorZ
-
I turn'd me to the rich man thenA2
For silently stood heB
You ask'd me why the Poor complainA
And these have answer'd theeB
