Bright on the mountain's heathy slopeA
The day's last splendors shineB
And rich with many a radiant hueC
Gleam gayly on the RhineB
-
And many a one from Waldhurst's wallsD
Along the river stroll'dE
As ruffling o'er the pleasant streamF
The evening gales came coldE
-
So as they stray'd a swan they sawG
Sail stately up and strongH
And by a silver chain she drewC
A little boat alongH
-
Whose streamer to the gentle breezeI
Long floating fluttered lightJ
Beneath whose crimson canopyK
There lay reclin'd a knightJ
-
With arching crest and swelling breastL
On sail'd the stately swanM
And lightly up the parting tideN
The little boat came onM
-
And onward to the shore they drewC
And leapt to land the knightJ
And down the stream the swan drawn boatO
Fell soon beyond the sightJ
-
Was never a Maid in Waldhurst's wallsD
Might match with MargaretP
Her cheek was fair her eyes were darkQ
Her silken locks like jetR
-
And many a rich and noble youthS
Had strove to win the fairT
But never a rich or noble youthS
Could rival RudigerU
-
At every tilt and turney heK
Still bore away the prizeV
For knightly feats superior stillW
And knightly courtesiesI
-
His gallant feats his looks his loveX
Soon won the willing fairT
And soon did Margaret becomeY
The wife of RudigerU
-
Like morning dreams of happinessZ
Fast roll'd the months awayA2
For he was kind and she was kindB2
And who so blest as theyA2
-
Yet Rudiger would sometimes sitP
Absorb'd in silent thoughtC2
And his dark downward eye would seemF
With anxious meaning fraughtC2
-
But soon he rais'd his looks againD2
And smil'd his cares ewayA2
And mid the hall of gaietyC2
Was none like him so gayA2
-
And onward roll'd the waining monthsE2
The hour appointed cameF2
And Margaret her RudigerU
Hail'd with a father's nameF2
-
But silently did RudigerU
The little infant seeK
And darkly on the babe he gaz'dC2
And very sad was heK
-
And when to bless the little babeG2
The holy Father cameF2
To cleanse the stains of sin awayA2
In Christ's redeeming nameF2
-
Then did the cheek of RudigerU
Assume a death pale hueC
And on his clammy forehead stoodC2
The cold convulsive dewC
-
And faltering in his speech he badeC2
The Priest the rites delayA2
Till he could to right health restor'dC2
Enjoy the festive dayA2
-
When o'er the many tinted skyH2
He saw the day declineB
He called upon his MargaretC2
To walk beside the RhineB
-
And we will take the little babeG2
For soft the breeze that blowsI2
And the wild murmurs of the streamF
Will lull him to reposeI2
-
So forth together did they goJ2
The evening breeze was mildC2
And Rudiger upon his armK2
Did pillow the sweet childC2
-
And many a one from Waldhurst's wallsD
Along the banks did roamL2
But soon the evening wind came coldC2
And all betook them homeL2
-
Yet Rudiger in silent moodC2
Along the banks would roamL2
Nor aught could Margaret prevailM2
To turn his footsteps homeL2
-
Oh turn thee turn thee RudigerU
The rising mists beholdC2
The evening wind is damp and chillW
The little babe is coldC2
-
Now hush thee hush thee MargaretC2
The mists will do no harmK2
And from the wind the little babeG2
Lies sheltered on my armK2
-
Oh turn thee turn thee RudigerU
Why onward wilt thou roamL2
The moon is up the night is coldC2
And we are far from homeL2
-
He answered not for now he sawG
A Swan come sailing strongH
And by a silver chain she drewC
A little boat alongH
-
To shore they came and to the boatC2
Fast leapt he with the childC2
And in leapt Margaret breathless nowN2
And pale with fear and wildC2
-
With arching crest and swelling breastC2
On sail'd the stately swanM
And lightly down the rapid tideC2
The little boat went onM
-
The full orb'd moon that beam'd aroundC2
Pale splendor thro' the nightC2
Cast through the crimson canopyK
A dim discoloured lightC2
-
And swiftly down the hurrying streamF
In silence still they sailM2
And the long streamer fluttering fastC2
Flapp'd to the heavy galeM2
-
And he was mute in sullen thoughtC2
And she was mute with fearO2
Nor sound but of the parting tideC2
Broke on the listening earP2
-
The little babe began to cryH2
And waked his mother's careT
Now give to me the little babeG2
For God's sake RudigerU
-
Now hush thee hush thee MargaretC2
Nor my poor heart distressQ2
I do but pay perforce the priceR2
Of former happinessZ
-
And hush thee too my little babeG2
Thy cries so feeble ceaseS2
Lie still lie still a little whileT2
And thou shalt be at peaceS2
-
So as he spake to land they drewC
And swift he stept on shoreU2
And him behind did MargaretC2
Close follow evermoreU2
-
It was a place all desolateC2
Nor house nor tree was thereT
And there a rocky mountain roseI2
Barren and bleak and bareT
-
And at its base a cavern yawn'dC2
No eye its depth might viewC
For in the moon beam shining roundC2
That darkness darker grewC
-
Cold Horror crept thro' Margaret's bloodC2
Her heart it paus'd with fearO2
When Rudiger approach'd the caveV2
And cried lo I am hereP2
-
A deep sepulchral sound the caveV2
Return'd lo I am hereP2
And black from out the cavern gloomW2
Two giant arms appearO2
-
And Rudiger approach'd and heldC2
The little infant nighH2
Then Margaret shriek'd and gather'd thenD2
New powers from agonyK
-
And round the baby fast and firmX2
Her trembling arms she foldsY2
And with a strong convulsive graspZ2
The little infant holdsY2
-
Now help me Jesus loud she criesV
And loud on God she callsD
Then from the grasp of RudigerU
The little infant fallsD
-
And now he shriek'd for now his frameF2
The huge black arms clasp'd roundC2
And dragg'd the wretched RudigerU
Adown the dark profoundC2
