Author Note Divers Princes and Noblemen being assembled in a beautiful and fairA
Palace which was situate upon the river Rhine they beheld a boat orB
small barge make toward the shore drawn by a Swan in a silver chainC
the one end fastened about her neck the other to the vessel and in itD
an unknown soldier a man of a comely personage and graceful presenceE
who stept upon the shore which done the boat guided by the Swan leftF
him and floated down the river This man fell afterward in league withG
a fair gentlewoman married her and by her had many children AfterH
some years the same Swan came with the same barge into the same placeI
the soldier entering into it was carried thence the way he came leftF
wife children and family and was never seen amongst them afterH
-
Now who can judge this to be other than one of those spirits that areJ
named Incubi says Thomas Heywood I have adopted his story but not hisK
solution making the unknown soldier not an evil spirit but one who hadL
purchased happiness of a malevolent being by the promised sacrifice ofM
his first born childN
-
-
-
Bright on the mountain's heathy slopeO
The day's last splendors shineP
And rich with many a radiant hueQ
Gleam gayly on the RhineP
-
And many a one from Waldhurst's wallsR
Along the river stroll'dS
As ruffling o'er the pleasant streamT
The evening gales came coldS
-
So as they stray'd a swan they sawU
Sail stately up and strongV
And by a silver chain she drewQ
A little boat alongV
-
Whose streamer to the gentle breezeW
Long floating fluttered lightX
Beneath whose crimson canopyY
There lay reclin'd a knightX
-
With arching crest and swelling breastZ
On sail'd the stately swanA2
And lightly up the parting tideB2
The little boat came onA2
-
And onward to the shore they drewQ
And leapt to land the knightX
And down the stream the swan drawn boatC2
Fell soon beyond the sightX
-
Was never a Maid in Waldhurst's wallsR
Might match with MargaretD
Her cheek was fair her eyes were darkD2
Her silken locks like jetE2
-
And many a rich and noble youthF2
Had strove to win the fairA
But never a rich or noble youthF2
Could rival RudigerH
-
At every tilt and turney heY
Still bore away the prizeG2
For knightly feats superior stillH2
And knightly courtesiesW
-
His gallant feats his looks his loveM
Soon won the willing fairA
And soon did Margaret becomeI2
The wife of RudigerH
-
Like morning dreams of happinessJ2
Fast roll'd the months awayK2
For he was kind and she was kindL2
And who so blest as theyK2
-
Yet Rudiger would sometimes sitD
Absorb'd in silent thoughtM2
And his dark downward eye would seemT
With anxious meaning fraughtM2
-
But soon he rais'd his looks againN2
And smil'd his cares ewayK2
And mid the hall of gaietyM2
Was none like him so gayK2
-
And onward roll'd the waining monthsO2
The hour appointed cameP2
And Margaret her RudigerH
Hail'd with a father's nameP2
-
But silently did RudigerH
The little infant seeY
And darkly on the babe he gaz'dM2
And very sad was heY
-
And when to bless the little babeQ2
The holy Father cameP2
To cleanse the stains of sin awayK2
In Christ's redeeming nameP2
-
Then did the cheek of RudigerH
Assume a death pale hueQ
And on his clammy forehead stoodM2
The cold convulsive dewQ
-
And faltering in his speech he badeM2
The Priest the rites delayK2
Till he could to right health restor'dM2
Enjoy the festive dayK2
-
When o'er the many tinted skyR2
He saw the day declineP
He called upon his MargaretM2
To walk beside the RhineP
-
And we will take the little babeQ2
For soft the breeze that blowsS2
And the wild murmurs of the streamT
Will lull him to reposeS2
-
So forth together did they goT2
The evening breeze was mildM2
And Rudiger upon his armU2
Did pillow the sweet childM2
-
And many a one from Waldhurst's wallsR
Along the banks did roamV2
But soon the evening wind came coldM2
And all betook them homeV2
-
Yet Rudiger in silent moodM2
Along the banks would roamV2
Nor aught could Margaret prevailW2
To turn his footsteps homeV2
-
Oh turn thee turn thee RudigerH
The rising mists beholdM2
The evening wind is damp and chillH2
The little babe is coldM2
-
Now hush thee hush thee MargaretM2
The mists will do no harmU2
And from the wind the little babeQ2
Lies sheltered on my armU2
-
Oh turn thee turn thee RudigerH
Why onward wilt thou roamV2
The moon is up the night is coldM2
And we are far from homeV2
-
He answered not for now he sawU
A Swan come sailing strongV
And by a silver chain she drewQ
A little boat alongV
-
To shore they came and to the boatM2
Fast leapt he with the childM2
And in leapt Margaret breathless nowX2
And pale with fear and wildM2
-
With arching crest and swelling breastM2
On sail'd the stately swanA2
And lightly down the rapid tideM2
The little boat went onA2
-
The full orb'd moon that beam'd aroundM2
Pale splendor thro' the nightM2
Cast through the crimson canopyY
A dim discoloured lightM2
-
And swiftly down the hurrying streamT
In silence still they sailW2
And the long streamer fluttering fastM2
Flapp'd to the heavy galeW2
-
And he was mute in sullen thoughtM2
And she was mute with fearY2
Nor sound but of the parting tideM2
Broke on the listening earZ2
-
The little babe began to cryR2
And waked his mother's careA
Now give to me the little babeQ2
For God's sake RudigerH
-
Now hush thee hush thee MargaretM2
Nor my poor heart distressA3
I do but pay perforce the priceB3
Of former happinessJ2
-
And hush thee too my little babeQ2
Thy cries so feeble ceaseC3
Lie still lie still a little whileD3
And thou shalt be at peaceC3
-
So as he spake to land they drewQ
And swift he stept on shoreB
And him behind did MargaretM2
Close follow evermoreB
-
It was a place all desolateM2
Nor house nor tree was thereA
And there a rocky mountain roseS2
Barren and bleak and bareA
-
And at its base a cavern yawn'dM2
No eye its depth might viewQ
For in the moon beam shining roundM2
That darkness darker grewQ
-
Cold Horror crept thro' Margaret's bloodM2
Her heart it paus'd with fearY2
When Rudiger approach'd the caveE3
And cried lo I am hereZ2
-
A deep sepulchral sound the caveE3
Return'd lo I am hereZ2
And black from out the cavern gloomF3
Two giant arms appearY2
-
And Rudiger approach'd and heldM2
The little infant nighR2
Then Margaret shriek'd and gather'd thenN2
New powers from agonyY
-
And round the baby fast and firmG3
Her trembling arms she foldsH3
And with a strong convulsive graspI3
The little infant holdsH3
-
Now help me Jesus loud she criesG2
And loud on God she callsR
Then from the grasp of RudigerH
The little infant fallsR
-
And now he shriek'd for now his frameP2
The huge black arms clasp'd roundM2
And dragg'd the wretched RudigerH
Adown the dark profoundM2
