Poussin most pleasantly thy pictur'd scenesA
Beguile the lonely hour I sit and gazeB
With lingering eye till charmed FANCY makesC
The lovely landscape live and the rapt soulD
From the foul haunts of herded humankindE
Flies far away with spirit speed and tastesF
The untainted air that with the lively hueG
Of health and happiness illumes the cheekH
Of mountain LIBERTY My willing soulD
All eager follows on thy faery flightsI
FANCY best friend whose blessed witcheriesI
With loveliest prospects cheat the travellerJ
O'er the long wearying desart of the worldK
Nor dost thou FANCY with such magic mockL
My heart as demon born old Merlin knewG
Or Alquif or Zarzafiel's sister sageM
Whose vengeful anguish for so many a yearN
Held in the jacinth sepulchre entrancedO
Lisvart and Perion pride of chivalryP
Friend of my lonely hours thou leadest meP
To such calm joys as Nature wise and goodQ
Proffers in vain to all her wretched sonsI
Her wretched sons who pine with want amidR
The abundant earth and blindly bow them downS
Before the Moloch shrines of WEALTH and POWERJ
AUTHORS of EVIL Oh it is most sweetT
To medicine with thy wiles the wearied heartU
Sick of reality The little pileV
That tops the summit of that craggy hillW
Shall be my dwelling craggy is the hillW
And steep yet thro' yon hazels upward leadsI
The easy path along whose winding wayX
Now close embowered I hear the unseen streamY
Dash down anon behold its sparkling foamZ
Gleam thro' the thicket and ascending onA2
Now pause me to survey the goodly valeB2
That opens on my vision Half way upC2
Pleasant it were upon some broad smooth rockL
To sit and sun me and look down belowD2
And watch the goatherd down that high bank'd pathE2
Urging his flock grotesque and bidding nowF2
His lean rough dog from some near cliff to driveG2
The straggler while his barkings loud and quickH2
Amid their trembling bleat arising oftI2
Fainter and fainter from the hollow roadJ2
Send their far echoes till the waterfallK2
Hoarse bursting from the cavern'd cliff beneathL2
Their dying murmurs drown A little yetM2
Onward and I have gain'd the upmost heightN2
Fair spreads the vale below I see the streamY
Stream radiant on beneath the noontide skyO2
Where the town spires behind the castle towersI
Rise graceful brown the mountain in its shadeP2
Whose circling grandeur part by mists conceal'dQ2
Part with white rocks resplendant in the sunR2
Should bound mine eyes aye and my wishes tooG
For I would have no hope or fear beyondS2
The empty turmoil of the worthless worldK
Its vanities and vices would not vexI
My quiet heart The traveller who beheldK
The low tower of the little pile might deemY
It were the house of GOD nor would he errT2
So deeming for that home would be the homeZ
Of PEACE and LOVE and they would hallow itK
To HIM Oh life of blessedness to reapU2
The fruit of honorable toil and boundK
Our wishes with our wants delightful ThoughtsI
That sooth the solitude of maniac HOPEV2
Ye leave her to reality awak'dK
Like the poor captive from some fleeting dreamY
Of friends and liberty and home restor'dK
Startled and listening as the midnight stormW2
Beats hard and heavy thro' his dungeon barsI
