No eye beheld when William plungedA
Young Edmund in the streamB
No human ear but William's heardC
Young Edmund's drowning screamB
-
Submissive all the vassals own'dD
The murderer for their LordE
And he the rightful heir possessedF
The house of ErlingfordF
-
The ancient house of ErlingfordF
Stood midst a fair domainG
And Severn's ample waters nearH
Roll'd through the fertile plainG
-
And often the way faring manI
Would love to linger thereJ
Forgetful of his onward roadF
To gaze on scenes so fairJ
-
But never could Lord William dareJ
To gaze on Severn's streamB
In every wind that swept its wavesK
He heard young Edmund screamB
-
In vain at midnight's silent hourL
Sleep closed the murderer's eyesM
In every dream the murderer sawN
Young Edmund's form ariseM
-
In vain by restless conscience drivenO
Lord William left his homeP
Far from the scenes that saw his guiltF
In pilgrimage to roamP
-
To other climes the pilgrim fledF
But could not fly despairJ
He sought his home again but peaceQ
Was still a stranger thereJ
-
Each hour was tedious long yet swiftF
The months appear'd to rollR
And now the day return'd that shookS
With terror William's soulR
-
A day that William never feltF
Return without dismayT
For well had conscience kalenderedF
Young Edmund's dying dayF
-
A fearful day was that the rainsU
Fell fast with tempest roarV
And the swoln tide of Severn spreadF
Far on the level shoreV
-
In vain Lord William sought the feastF
In vain he quaff'd the bowlR
And strove with noisy mirth to drownW
The anguish of his soulR
-
The tempest as its sudden swellX
In gusty howlings cameY
With cold and death like feelings seem'dF
To thrill his shuddering frameY
-
Reluctant now as night came onZ
His lonely couch he prestF
And wearied out he sunk to sleepA2
To sleep but not to restF
-
Beside that couch his brother's formB2
Lord Edmund seem'd to standF
Such and so pale as when in deathC2
He grasp'd his brother's handF
-
Such and so pale his face as whenD2
With faint and faltering tongueE2
To William's care a dying chargeF2
He left his orphan sonO
-
I bade thee with a father's loveG2
My orphan Edmund guardF
Well William hast thou kept thy chargeF2
Now take thy due rewardF
-
He started up each limb convuls'dF
With agonizing fearH
He only heard the storm of nightF
'Twas music to his earH2
-
When lo the voice of loud alarmI2
His inmost soul appalsU
What ho Lord William rise in hasteF
The water saps thy wallsU
-
He rose in haste beneath the wallsU
He saw the flood appearH
It hemm'd him round 'twas midnight nowJ2
No human aid was nearH
-
He heard the shout of joy for nowJ2
A boat approach'd the wallK2
And eager to the welcome aidF
They crowd for safety allK2
-
My boat is small the boatman criedF
This dangerous haste forbearH
Wait other aid this little barkL2
But one from hence can bearH
-
Lord William leap'd into the boatF
Haste haste to yonder shoreH
And ample wealth shall well rewardF
Ply swift and strong the oarH
-
The boatman plied the oar the boatF
Went light along the streamB
Sudden Lord William heard a cryH
Like Edmund's drowning screamB
-
The boatman paus'd methought I heardF
A child's distressful cryH
'Twas but the howling wind of nightF
Lord William made replyH
-
Haste haste ply swift and strong the oarH
Haste haste across the streamB
Again Lord William heard a cryH
Like Edmund's drowning screamB
-
I heard a child's distressful screamB
The boatman cried againD2
Nay hasten on the night is darkL2
And we should search in vainG
-
Oh God Lord William dost thou knowM2
How dreadful 'tis to dieH
And can'st thou without pity hearH
A child's expiring cryH
-
How horrible it is to sinkN2
Beneath the chilly streamB
To stretch the powerless arms in vainG
In vain for help to screamB
-
The shriek again was heard It cameY
More deep more piercing loudF
That instant o'er the flood the moonO2
Shone through a broken cloudF
-
And near them they beheld a childF
Upon a crag he stoodF
A little crag and all aroundF
Was spread the rising floodF
-
The boatman plied the oar the boatF
Approach'd his resting placeU
The moon beam shone upon the childF
And show'd how pale his faceU
-
Now reach thine hand the boatman criedF
Lord William reach and saveP2
The child stretch'd forth his little handsU
To grasp the hand he gaveP2
-
Then William shriek'd the hand he touch'dF
Was cold and damp and deadF
He felt young Edmund in his armsU
A heavier weight than leadF
-
The boat sunk down the murderer sunkQ2
Beneath the avenging streamB
He rose he scream'd no human earH
Heard William's drowning screamB
