Jaspar was poor and want and viceA
Had made his heart like stoneB
And Jaspar look'd with envious eyesC
On riches not his ownB
-
On plunder bent abroad he wentD
Towards the close of dayE
And loitered on the lonely roadF
Impatient for his preyE
-
No traveller came he loiter'd longG
And often look'd aroundH
And paus'd and listen'd eagerlyI
To catch some coming soundH
-
He sat him down beside the streamJ
That crossed the lonely wayE
So fair a scene might well have charm'dK
All evil thoughts awayE
-
He sat beneath a willow treeI
That cast a trembling shadeL
The gentle river full in frontM
A little island madeL
-
Where pleasantly the moon beam shoneB
Upon the poplar treesN
Whose shadow on the stream belowO
Play'd slowly to the breezeN
-
He listen'd and he heard the windP
That waved the willow treeI
He heard the waters flow alongG
And murmur quietlyI
-
He listen'd for the traveller's treadQ
The nightingale sung sweetR
He started up for now he heardS
The sound of coming feetR
-
He started up and graspt a stakeT
And waited for his preyE
There came a lonely travellerU
And Jaspar crost his wayE
-
But Jaspar's threats and curses fail'dV
The traveller to appalI
He would not lightly yield the purseW
That held his little allI
-
Awhile he struggled but he stroveX
With Jaspar's strength in vainY
Beneath his blows he fell and groan'dZ
And never spoke againA2
-
He lifted up the murdered manB2
And plunged him in the floodC2
And in the running waters thenA2
He cleansed his hands from bloodC2
-
The waters closed around the corpseD2
And cleansed his hands from goreE2
The willow waved the stream flowed onF2
And murmured as beforeE2
-
There was no human eye had seenG2
The blood the murderer spiltH2
And Jaspar's conscience never knewI2
The avenging goad of guiltH2
-
And soon the ruffian had consum'dJ2
The gold he gain'd so illI
And years of secret guilt pass'd onF2
And he was needy stillI
-
One eve beside the alehouse fireU
He sat as it befellI
When in there came a labouring manB2
Whom Jaspar knew full wellI
-
He sat him down by Jaspar's sideK2
A melancholy manB2
For spite of honest toil the worldL2
Went hard with JonathanM2
-
His toil a little earn'd and heI
With little was contentD
But sickness on his wife had fallenM2
And all he had was spentD
-
Then with his wife and little onesN2
He shared the scanty mealI
And saw their looks of wretchednessN2
And felt what wretches feelI
-
That very morn the Landlord's powerU
Had seized the little leftO2
And now the sufferer found himselfP2
Of every thing bereftO2
-
He lent his head upon his handQ2
His elbow on his kneeI
And so by Jaspar's side he satR2
And not a word said heI
-
Nay why so downcast Jaspar criedK2
Come cheer up JonathanM2
Drink neighbour drink 'twill warm thy heartS2
Come come take courage manB2
-
He took the cup that Jaspar gaveT2
And down he drain'd it quickU2
I have a wife said JonathanM2
And she is deadly sickU2
-
She has no bed to lie uponF2
I saw them take her bedQ
And I have children would to GodV2
That they and I were deadQ
-
Our Landlord he goes home to nightW2
And he will sleep in peaceN2
I would that I were in my graveT2
For there all troubles ceaseN2
-
In vain I pray'd him to forbearU
Tho' wealth enough has heI
God be to him as mercilessN2
As he has been to meI
-
When Jaspar saw the poor man's soulI
On all his ills intentD
He plied him with the heartening cupX2
And with him forth he wentD
-
This landlord on his homeward roadF
'Twere easy now to meetR
The road is lonesome JonathanM2
And vengeance man is sweetR
-
He listen'd to the tempter's voiceN2
The thought it made him startS2
His head was hot and wretchednessN2
Had hardened now his heartS2
-
Along the lonely road they wentD
And waited for their preyU
They sat them down beside the streamJ
That crossed the lonely wayU
-
They sat them down beside the streamJ
And never a word they saidQ
They sat and listen'd silentlyI
To hear the traveller's treadQ
-
The night was calm the night was darkY2
No star was in the skyZ2
The wind it waved the willow boughsN2
The stream flowed quietlyI
-
The night was calm the air was stillI
Sweet sung the nightingaleI
The soul of Jonathan was sooth'dA3
His heart began to failI
-
'Tis weary waiting here he criedK2
And now the hour is lateB3
Methinks he will not come to nightW2
'Tis useless more to waitB3
-
Have patience man the ruffian saidQ
A little we may waitB3
But longer shall his wife expectC3
Her husband at the gateB3
-
Then Jonathan grew sick at heartS2
My conscience yet is clearU
Jaspar it is not yet too lateB3
I will not linger hereU
-
How now cried Jaspar why I thoughtD3
Thy conscience was asleepE3
No more such qualms the night is darkY2
The river here is deepE3
-
What matters that said JonathanM2
Whose blood began to freezeN2
When there is one above whose eyeZ2
The deeds of darkness seesN2
-
We are safe enough said Jaspar thenA2
If that be all thy fearU
Nor eye below nor eye aboveF3
Can pierce the darkness hereU
-
That instant as the murderer spakeT
There came a sudden lightW2
Strong as the mid day sun it shoneB
Though all around was nightW2
-
It hung upon the willow treeI
It hung upon the floodC2
It gave to view the poplar isleI
And all the scene of bloodC2
-
The traveller who journies thereU
He surely has espiedC2
A madman who has made his homeG3
Upon the river's sideC2
-
His cheek is pale his eye is wildC2
His look bespeaks despairU
For Jaspar since that hour has madeC2
His home unshelter'd thereU
-
And fearful are his dreams at nightC2
And dread to him the dayC2
He thinks upon his untold crimeH3
And never dares to prayC2
-
The summer suns the winter stormsN2
O'er him unheeded rollI
For heavy is the weight of bloodC2
Upon the maniac's soulI
