Time Night Scene the woodsA
-
-
Where shall I turn me whither shall I bendB
My weary way thus worn with toil and faintC
How thro' the thorny mazes of this woodD
Attain my distant dwelling that deep cryE
That rings along the forest seems to soundF
My parting knell it is the midnight howlG
Of hungry monsters prowling for their preyH
Again oh save me save me gracious HeavenI
I am not fit to dieE
Thou coward wretchJ
Why heaves thy trembling heart why shake thy limbsK
Beneath their palsied burden is there oughtL
So lovely in existence would'st thou drainM
Even to its dregs the bitter draught of lifeN
Dash down the loathly bowl poor outcast slaveO
Stamp'd with the brand of Vice and InfamyP
Why should the villain Frederic shrink from DeathQ
-
Death where the magic in that empty nameR
That chills my inmost heart why at the thoughtL
Starts the cold dew of fear on every limbS
There are no terrors to surround the GraveO
When the calm Mind collected in itselfT
Surveys that narrow house the ghastly trainM
That haunt the midnight of delirious GuiltU
Then vanish in that home of endless restV
All sorrows cease Would I might slumber thereW
-
Why then this panting of the fearful heartX
This miser love of Life that dreads to loseY
Its cherish'd torment shall the diseased manZ
Yield up his members to the surgeon's knifeN
Doubtful of succour but to ease his frameR
Of fleshly anguish and the coward wretchJ
Whose ulcered soul can know no human helpA2
Shrink from the best Physician's certain aidB2
Oh it were better far to lay me downC2
Here on this cold damp earth till some wild beastD2
Seize on his willing victimE2
-
If to dieE
Were all it were most sweet to rest my headF2
On the cold clod and sleep the sleep of DeathQ
But if the Archangel's trump at the last hourG2
Startle the ear of Death and wake the soulH2
To frenzy dreams of infancy fit talesI2
For garrulous beldames to affrighten babesJ2
I have been guilty yet my mind can bearW
The retrospect of guilt yet in the hourG2
Of deep contrition to THE ETERNAL lookK2
For mercy for the child of PovertyP
And disinherited of happinessL2
-
What if I warr'd upon the world the worldM2
Had wrong'd me first I had endur'd the illsN2
Of hard injustice all this goodly earthO2
Was but to me one wild waste wildernessL2
I had no share in Nature's patrimonyP
Blasted were all my morning hopes of YouthP2
Dark DISAPPOINTMENT follow'd on my waysQ2
CARE was my bosom inmate and keen WANTR2
Gnaw'd at my heart ETERNAL ONE thou know'stS2
How that poor heart even in the bitter hourG2
Of lewdest revelry has inly yearn'dT2
For peaceU2
-
My FATHER I will call on theeP
Pour to thy mercy seat my earnest prayerW
And wait thy peace in bowedness of soulH2
Oh thoughts of comfort how the afflicted heartX
Tired with the tempest of its passions restsV2
On you with holy hope the hollow howlG
Of yonder harmless tenant of the woodsA
Bursts not with terror on the sober'd senseW2
If I have sinn'd against mankind on themX2
Be that past sin they made me what I wasY2
In these extremest climes can Want no moreZ2
Urge to the deeds of darkness and at lengthA3
Here shall I rest What tho' my hut be poorB3
The rains descend not thro' its humble roofC3
Would I were there again the night is coldD3
And what if in my wanderings I should rouseE3
The savage from his thicketF3
-
Hark the gunI
And lo the fire of safety I shall reachJ
My little hut again again by toilG3
Force from the stubborn earth my sustenanceH3
And quick ear'd guilt will never start alarm'dI3
Amid the well earn'd meal This felon's garbJ3
Will it not shield me from the winds of HeavenI
And what could purple more Oh strengthen meP
Eternal One in this serener stateK3
Cleanse thou mine heart so PENITENCE and FAITHL3
Shall heal my soul and my last days be peaceU2
