Author Note In Finland there is a Castle which is called the New Rock moated about with a river of unfounded depth the water black and the fish thereinA
very distateful to the palate In this are spectres often seen whichB
foreshew either the death of the Governor or some prime officerC
belonging to the place and most commonly it appeareth in the shape ofD
an harper sweetly singing and dallying and playing under the waterC
-
It is reported of one Donica that after she was dead the Devil walkedE
in her body for the space of two years so that none suspected but thatF
she was still alive for she did both speak and eat though veryG
sparingly only she had a deep paleness on her countenance which wasH
the only sign of death At length a Magician coming by where she wasH
then in the company of many other virgins as soon as he beheld her heG
said fair Maids why keep you company with the dead Virgin whom youI
suppose to be alive when taking away the magic charm which was tiedJ
under her arm the body fell down lifeless and without motionK
-
The following Ballad is founded on these stories They are to be foundL
in the notes to The Hierarchies of the blessed Angels a Poem by ThomasM
Heywood printed in folio by Adam IslipN
-
-
-
High on a rock whose castled shadeO
Darken'd the lake belowP
In ancient strength majestic stoodQ
The towers of ArlinkowR
-
The fisher in the lake belowP
Durst never cast his netS
Nor ever swallow in its wavesT
Her passing wings would wetS
-
The cattle from its ominous banksU
In wild alarm would runK
Tho' parched with thirst and faint beneathV
The summer's scorching sunK
-
For sometimes when no passing breezeW
The long lank sedges wavedX
All white with foam and heaving highY
Its deafening billows ravedX
-
And when the tempest from its baseZ
The rooted pine would shakeR
The powerless storm unruffling sweptA2
Across the calm dead lakeR
-
And ever then when Death drew nearB2
The house of ArlinkowR
Its dark unfathom'd depths did sendC2
Strange music from belowP
-
The Lord of Arlinkow was oldD2
One only child had heG
Donica was the Maiden's nameE2
As fair as fair might beG
-
A bloom as bright as opening mornF2
Flush'd o'er her clear white cheekR
The music of her voice was mildG2
Her full dark eyes were meekR
-
Far was her beauty known for noneK
So fair could Finland boastH2
Her parents loved the Maiden muchI2
Young EBERHARD loved her mostH2
-
Together did they hope to treadJ2
The pleasant path of lifeK2
For now the day drew near to makeR
Donica Eberhard's wifeK2
-
The eve was fair and mild the airL2
Along the lake they strayM2
The eastern hill reflected brightN2
The fading tints of dayM2
-
And brightly o'er the water stream'dO2
The liquid radiance wideJ
Donica's little dog ran onP2
And gambol'd at her sideJ
-
Youth Health and Love bloom'd on her cheekR
Her full dark eyes expressQ2
In many a glance to EberhardR2
Her soul's meek tendernessM
-
Nor sound was heard nor passing galeS2
Sigh'd thro' the long lank sedgeT2
The air was hushed no little waveU2
Dimpled the water's edgeT2
-
Sudden the unfathom'd lake sent forthV2
Strange music from beneathV
And slowly o'er the waters sail'dW2
The solemn sounds of DeathX2
-
As the deep sounds of Death aroseY2
Donica's cheek grew paleS2
And in the arms of EberhardR2
The senseless Maiden fellZ2
-
Loudly the youth in terror shriek'dA3
And loud he call'd for aidO
And with a wild and eager lookR
Gaz'd on the death pale MaidO
-
But soon again did better thoughtsB3
In Eberhard ariseC3
And he with trembling hope beheldO
The Maiden raise her eyesC3
-
And on his arm reclin'd she movedO
With feeble pace and slowP
And soon with strength recover'd reach'dO
-
Yet never to Donica's cheekR
Return'd the lively hueI
Her cheeks were deathy white and wanP2
Her lips a livid blueI
-
Her eyes so bright and black of yoreD3
Were now more black and brightO
And beam'd strange lustre in her faceZ
So deadly wan and whiteO
-
The dog that gambol'd by her sideO
And lov'd with her to strayM2
Now at his alter'd mistress howl'dO
And fled in fear awayM2
-
Yet did the faithful EberhardO
Not love the Maid the lessQ2
He gaz'd with sorrow but he gaz'dO
With deeper tendernessM
-
And when he found her health unharm'dO
He would not brook delayM2
But press'd the not unwilling MaidO
To fix the bridal dayM2
-
And when at length it came with joyE3
They hail'd the bridal dayM2
And onward to the house of GodO
They went their willing wayM2
-
And as they at the altar stoodO
And heard the sacred riteO
The hallowed tapers dimly stream'dO
A pale sulphureous lightO
-
And as the Youth with holy warmthF3
Her hand in his did holdO
Sudden he felt Donica's handO
Grow deadly damp and coldO
-
And loudly did he shriek for loP
A Spirit met his viewI
And Eberhard in the angel formG3
His own Donica knewI
-
That instant from her earthly frameE2
Howling the Daemon fledO
And at the side of EberhardO
The livid form fell deadO
