Birth-day Ode, 1796 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCADEDE FFGHHGII JJKFFKK LLMFMF FFFFNNGFFG OPKGGKBQBR

And wouldst thou seek the low abodeA
Where PEACE delights to dwellB
Pause Traveller on thy way of lifeC
With many a snare and peril rifeC
Is that long labyrinth of roadA
Dark is the vale of years beforeD
Pause Traveller on thy wayE
Nor dare the dangerous path exploreD
Till old EXPERIENCE comes to lend his leading rayE
-
Not he who comes with lanthorn lightF
Shall guide thy groping pace arightF
With faltering feet and slowG
No let him rear the torch on highH
And every maze shall meet thine eyeH
And every snare and every foeG
Then with steady step and strongI
Traveller shalt thou march alongI
-
Tho' POWER invite thee to her hallJ
Regard not thou her tempting callJ
Her splendors meteor glareK
Tho' courteous Flattery there awaitF
And Wealth adorn the dome of StateF
There stalks the midnight spectre CAREK
PEACE Traveller does not sojourn thereK
-
If FAME allure thee climb not thouL
To that steep mountain's craggy browL
Where stands her stately pileM
For far from thence does PEACE abideF
And thou shall find FAME'S favouring smileM
Cold as the feeble Sun on Heclas snow clad sideF
-
And Traveller as thou hopest to findF
That low and loved abodeF
Retire thee from the thronging roadF
And shun the mob of human kindF
Ah I hear how old EXPERIENCE schoolsN
Fly fly the crowd of Knaves and FoolsN
And thou shalt fly from woeG
The one thy heedless heart will greetF
With Judas smile and thou wilt meetF
In every Fool a FoeG
-
So safely mayest thou pass from theseO
And reach secure the home of PEACEP
And FRIENDSHIP find thee thereK
No happier state can mortal knowG
No happier lot can Earth bestowG
If LOVE thy lot shall shareK
Yet still CONTENT with him may dwellB
Whom HYMEN will not blessQ
And VIRTUE sojourn in the cellB
Of HERMIT HAPPINESSR
