It was a summer eveningA
Old Kaspar's work was doneB
And he before his cottage doorC
Was sitting in the sunB
And by him sported on the greenD
His little grandchild WilhelmineE
-
She saw her brother PeterkinE
Roll something large and roundF
Which he beside the rivuletF
In playing there had foundF
He came to ask what he had foundF
That was so large and smooth and roundF
-
Old Kaspar took it from the boyG
Who stood expectant byH
And then the old man shook his headF
And with a natural sighH
''Tis some poor fellow's skull ' said heI
'Who fell in the great victoryI
-
'I find them in the gardenB
For there's many here aboutF
And often when I go to ploughJ
The ploughshare turns them outF
For many thousand men ' said heI
'Were slain in that great victory '-
-
'Now tell us what 'twas all about '-
Young Peterkin he criesK
And little Wilhelmine looks upL
With wonder waiting eyesK
'Now tell us all about the warC
And what they fought each other for '-
-
'It was the English ' Kaspar criedF
'Who put the French to routF
But what they fought each other forC
I could not well make outF
But everybody said ' quoth heI
'That 'twas a famous victoryI
-
'My father lived at Blenheim thenM
Yon little stream hard byH
They burnt his dwelling to the groundF
And he was forced to flyH
So with his wife and child he fledF
Nor had he where to rest his headF
-
'With fire and sword the country roundF
Was wasted far and wideF
And many a childing mother thenM
And new born baby diedF
But things like that you know must beI
At every famous victoryI
-
'They say it was a shocking sightF
After the field was wonB
For many thousand bodies hereN
Lay rotting in the sunB
But things like that you know must beI
After a famous victoryI
-
'Great praise the Duke of Marlbro' wonB
And our good Prince Eugene '-
'Why 'twas a very wicked thing '-
Said little WilhelmineE
'Nay nay my little girl ' quoth heI
'It was a famous victoryI
-
'And everybody praised the DukeO
Who this great fight did win '-
'But what good came of it at last '-
Quoth little PeterkinE
'Why that I cannot tell ' said heI
'But 'twas a famous victory '-
