My folks think I'm a serving maidA
Each time I visit homeB
They do not dream I ply a tradeA
As old as Greece or RomeB
For if they found I'd fouled their nameC
And was not white as snowD
I'm sure that they would die of shameC
Please God they'll never knowD
-
I clean the paint from off my faceE
In sober black I dressF
Of coquetry I leave no traceE
To give them vague distressF
And though it causes me a pangG
To play such sorry tricksH
About my neck I meekly hangG
A silver crufixH
-
And so with humble step I goD
Just like a child againI
To greet their Christmas candle glowD
A soul without a stainJ
So well I play my contrite partK
I make myself believeL
There's not a stain within my heartK
On Holy Christmas EveL
-
With double natures we are vextK
And what we feel we areM
A saint one day a sinner nextK
A red light or a starM
A prostitute or proselyteK
And in each part sincereN
So I become a vestal whiteK
One week in every yearN
-
For this I say without demurO
From out life's lurid loreP
Each righteous woman has in herO
A tincture of the whoreP
While every harpy of the nightK
As I have learned too wellQ
Holds in her heart a heaven lightK
To ransom her from hellQ
-
So I'll go home and sweep and dustK
I'll make the kitchen fireO
And be a model of daughters justK
The best they could desireO
I'll fondle them and cook their foodK
And Mother dear will sayH
Thank God my darling is as goodK
As when she went awayH
-
But after New Year's Day I'll fillR
My bag and though they grieveL
I'll bid them both good bye untilR
Another Christmas EveL
And then a knock upon the doorP
I'll find them waiting thereS
And angel like I'll come once moreP
In answer to their prayerS
-
Then Lo one night when candle lightK
Gleams mystic on the snowD
And music swells of Christmas bellsH
I'll come no more to goD
The old folks need my love and careS
Their gold shall gild my drossH
And evermore my breast shall bearS
My little silver crossH

mike brill: This poem makes me think of the ones who have no place or person to come home to. Robert's poems are catalysts for deeper thought one way or the other.
