Tom Paine Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC BDBD E FAFAAA GHG II JAJAAAA

An Englishman was Thomas PaineA
Who bled for libertyB
But while his fight was far from vainA
He died in povertyB
Though some are of the sober thinkingC
'Twas due to drinkingC
-
Yet this is what appeals to meB
Cobbet a friend loved him so wellD
He sailed across the surly seaB
To raw and rigid New RochelleD
With none to say 'Take him not from us '-
He raped the grave of ThomasE
-
And in his library he setF
These bones so woe begoneA
I have no doubt his eyes were wetF
To scan that skeletonA
That grinning skull from which in seasonA
Emerged the Age of ReasonA
-
Then Cobbet in his turn lay deadG
And auctioneering tonesH
Over his chattels rudely saidG
'Who wants them bloody bones '-
None did so they were scattered farI
And God knows where they areI
-
A friend of Franklin and of PittJ
He lived a stormy spanA
The flame of liberty he litJ
And rang the Rights of ManA
Yet pilgrims from Vermont and MaineA
In hero worship seek in vainA
The bones of Thomas PaineA
