I will not wash my faceA
I will not brush my hairB
I pig around the placeA
There's nobody to careB
Nothing but rock and treeC
Nothing but wood and stoneD
Oh God it's hell to beC
Alone alone aloneD
-
Snow peaks and deep gashed drawsE
Corral me in a ringF
I feel as if I wasG
The only living thingF
On all this blighted earthH
And so I frowst and shrinkI
And crouching by my hearthJ
I hear the thoughts I thinkI
-
I think of all I missK
The boys I used to knowL
The girls I used to kissK
The coin I used to blowL
The bars I used to hauntM
The racket and the rowL
The beers I didn't wantN
I wish I had 'em nowO
-
Day after day the sameP
Only a little worseQ
No one to grouch or blameP
Oh for a loving curseQ
Oh in the night I fearR
Haunted by nameless thingsS
Just for a voice to cheerR
Just for a hand that clingsS
-
Faintly as from a starT
Voices come o'er the lineU
Voices of ghosts afarT
Not in this world of mineU
Lives in whose loom I gropeV
Words in whose weft I hearW
Eager the thrill of hopeV
Awful the chill of fearR
-
I'm thinking out aloudX
I reckon that is badY
The snow is like a shroudX
Maybe I'm going madY
Say wouldn't that be toughZ
This awful hush that hugsA2
And chokes one is enoughZ
To make a man go bugsA2
-
There's not a thing to doB2
I cannot sleep at nightC2
No wonder I'm so blueB2
Oh for a friendly fightC2
The din and rush of strifeD2
A music hall aglowL
A crowd a city lifeD2
Dear God I miss it soL
-
Here you have moped enoughZ
Brace up and play the gameP
But say it's awful toughZ
Day after day the sameP
I've said that twice I betE2
Well there's not much to sayF2
I wish I had a petE2
Or something I could playF2
-
Cheer up don't get so glumG2
And sick of everythingF
The worst is yet to comeG2
God help you till the SpringF
God shield you from the FearR
Teach you to laugh not moanD
Ha ha it sounds so queerR
Alone alone aloneD
