The Missal Makers Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EAEAFGFG HIHIJKLK MNMNAOAO PQPQRSRS

To visit the EscurialA
We took a motor busB
And there a guide mercurialA
Took charge of usB
He showed us through room after roomC
And talked hour after hourD
Of place crypt and royal tombC
Of pomp and powerD
-
But in bewilderment of graceE
What pleased me most of allA
Were ancient missals proud in placeE
In stately hallA
A thousand tomes there were at leastF
All luminously brightG
That each a score of years some priestF
Had toiled to writeG
-
Poor patient monk who brushed and pennedH
From rise to set of sunI
And when his book came to an endH
His life was doneI
With heart of love to God aboveJ
For guidance he would prayK
And here behold his art of goldL
Undimmed todayK
-
And as our homeward way we tookM
The thought occurred to meN
If scribes would only write one bookM
How good 'twould beN
Or if our authors had to scrollA
Their words on vellum fairO
Their output might be very smallA
But oh how rareO
-
So writers of today take noteP
If you your souls would saveQ
Let every line be one to quoteP
And to engraveQ
Then though you dismally are deadR
You will be cheered to knowS
your precious prose may still be readR
Ten years or soS
