The Missal Makers Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EAEAFGFG HIHIJKLK MNMNAOAO PQPQRSRSTo visit the Escurial | A |
We took a motor bus | B |
And there a guide mercurial | A |
Took charge of us | B |
He showed us through room after room | C |
And talked hour after hour | D |
Of place crypt and royal tomb | C |
Of pomp and power | D |
- | |
But in bewilderment of grace | E |
What pleased me most of all | A |
Were ancient missals proud in place | E |
In stately hall | A |
A thousand tomes there were at least | F |
All luminously bright | G |
That each a score of years some priest | F |
Had toiled to write | G |
- | |
Poor patient monk who brushed and penned | H |
From rise to set of sun | I |
And when his book came to an end | H |
His life was done | I |
With heart of love to God above | J |
For guidance he would pray | K |
And here behold his art of gold | L |
Undimmed today | K |
- | |
And as our homeward way we took | M |
The thought occurred to me | N |
If scribes would only write one book | M |
How good 'twould be | N |
Or if our authors had to scroll | A |
Their words on vellum fair | O |
Their output might be very small | A |
But oh how rare | O |
- | |
So writers of today take note | P |
If you your souls would save | Q |
Let every line be one to quote | P |
And to engrave | Q |
Then though you dismally are dead | R |
You will be cheered to know | S |
your precious prose may still be read | R |
Ten years or so | S |
